Can You Rent a Campervan from Japan’s Major Rental Car Companies in Hokkaido? We Checked What the Big 4 Actually Offer [2026 Edition]

Planning a Hokkaido trip and looking to rent a campervan the same way you’d book any other rental car — opening Toyota Rent a Car or Nippon Rent-A-Car’s site — won’t get you far. Campervans don’t appear in their vehicle lists. We checked the official sites of Japan’s four major rental car companies, and none of them listed campervans among their vehicle classes or categories (confirmed 2026-08-11; the exact pages we checked are in the table below).

That doesn’t mean you can’t rent one — you’re just looking in the wrong place. Hokkaido has specialist campervan rental companies, with bases centered around New Chitose Airport and also scattered across Sapporo and Obihiro. Most of the vehicle types used for rental can be driven on a regular driver’s license.

Campervans Aren’t in the Major Rental Car Companies’ Vehicle Lists

We checked the following four companies. With renting in Hokkaido in mind, we looked at the three major nationwide companies plus Toyota Rent Lease Shin-Sapporo, which has a location in the Sapporo area.

All of these were confirmed on each company’s official site on 2026-08-11. One thing worth noting: none of the four companies explicitly states “we don’t handle campervans.” The accurate way to put it is that campervans simply don’t appear in their vehicle lists. We also haven’t checked every branch and outlet nationwide, so if you have a specific reason to rent from one of the major companies, contact the branch you want to use directly.

That said, for anyone about to make a booking, it’s faster to go straight to a company that specializes in campervan rentals than to keep searching a major company’s site for a vehicle that isn’t in its lineup.

Where to Rent Instead: Specialist Campervan Rental Companies

In Hokkaido, bases for companies that rent nothing but campervans are clustered mainly around New Chitose Airport. Fly in, pick up the vehicle right away, drive around the island, and return it near the airport — this flow is easy to set up, which is one of the advantages of Hokkaido.

Where a Regular Rental Car Mindset Trips You Up

Don’t expect to just show up and rent one on the day. Most specialist rental companies require advance booking online or by phone. A counter inside the airport terminal isn’t guaranteed. Meeting points and whether shuttle service is offered vary by base. It’s worth checking each base’s page before booking to make sure your flight’s arrival time lines up with the base’s reception hours.

In most cases, your existing license is fine. Most of the vehicle types used for rental can be driven on a regular driver’s license.
