Things to Do in Sapporo in Winter: Beyond the Snow Festival, Plus Seasonal Highlights and a Campervan Guide [2026-27]

Sapporo in winter is more than one week of snow sculptures. In winter 2026-27, the Sapporo White Illumination runs from its opening on November 20 until March 14, and in that span you also get the night view from Mt. Moiwa, ski areas inside the city, and the lantern-lit Jozankei Yukitoro (Welcome to Sapporo (Sapporo Tourism Association), checked 2026-10-07).

This guide helps winter visitors to Sapporo decide what to see and how to get around. Winter comes first, followed by short notes on spring through autumn. If you arrive by campervan, do not count on downtown parking. The last section covers parking at a suburban RV park and taking the subway into the city (Sapporo RV parks).

Normals are a guide to a typical year, not a forecast for the day. February, when the Snow Festival takes place, is also the month with the deepest snow.

Daylight is short too. According to calculations by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, on January 15, 2027, Sapporo has sunrise at 7:03 and sunset at 16:24 (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Calendar Computation Office, Sapporo, January 2027, checked 2026-10-07). Many of the city’s sights come out at night, so plan on getting around after dark. For how to read the temperatures from November to February, see Hokkaido winter temperatures.

Besides the Snow Festival, what lights can you see in winter? The White Illumination starts November 20

The Sapporo Snow Festival (its 77th edition) runs from Thursday, February 4 to Thursday, February 11, 2027 (a national holiday), at three sites: Odori, Tsudome, and Susukino (Sapporo Snow Festival official site, checked 2026-10-07). Parking at each site and how to move around if you come by car are covered in Snow Festival by campervan. What to add before and after the festival is covered in A Hokkaido winter trip beyond the Snow Festival.

The other main attraction is the White Illumination. The official tourism site lists it as running from November 20, 2026 to March 14, 2027 (Welcome to Sapporo, checked 2026-10-07).

Note, however, that the Odori site runs only from Friday, November 20 to Friday, December 25, 2026. Lights are on from 16:30 to 22:00 as a rule, and until midnight only on December 23–25 (official page for the Odori site, checked 2026-10-07). If you come in January, you will be seeing sites other than Odori. Dates and parking by site are in White Illumination by campervan.

Can you see the Mt. Moiwa night view in winter? The ropeway runs 11:00–22:00, ¥2,100 round trip

In the winter season (December to March), the Mt. Moiwa Ropeway runs 11:00–22:00 (last ascent 21:30), and the mini cable car runs 11:10–21:50 (last ascent 21:40). The round-trip fare for the ropeway and mini cable car set is ¥2,100 for adults and ¥1,050 for children. Service may be suspended in bad weather (Sapporo Mt. Moiwa Ropeway, hours and fares, checked 2026-10-07).

The same official page says the ropeway will be closed for its annual maintenance inspection from March 29 to April 28, 2027. The base station is at Fushimi 5-chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo, and the phone number for inquiries is 011-561-8177 (Sapporo City facility guide, checked 2026-10-07).

For the night view, winter is an easy season to plan around, since sunset comes in the 16:00 hour. The summit is cold, so first check the grip and warmth advice in our article on winter shoes and what to pack.

Can you ski inside Sapporo? Sapporo Kokusai opens Nov 20 and Sapporo Teine Nov 21 (scheduled)

Two ski areas in the city open early. Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort is scheduled to open on Friday, November 20, 2026, and is located in Jozankei, Minami-ku, Sapporo (Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort official site, checked 2026-10-07). Sapporo Teine’s official site announces a scheduled opening on November 21, 2026 (Sapporo Teine official site, checked 2026-10-07).

Both are listed as “scheduled,” and the dates can shift with snowfall. Opening dates for resorts outside the city, such as Niseko and Tomamu, are listed in Ski resort opening dates for the 2026-27 season.

How is the Jozankei Yukitoro changing? In 2027 it runs Jan 20 to Feb 28 in a new format

Jozankei Onsen town at dusk

The Jozankei Yukitoro, a snow-candle event that ran for about 15 years, held its final edition in 2026. In 2026 it ran from January 27 to February 3, with Jozankei Shrine as its venue (Notice: Yukitoro 2026 FINAL, checked 2026-10-07).

In 2027 it returns as the “New Jozankei Yukitoro 2027,” running from Wednesday, January 20 to Sunday, February 28, from 18:00 to 21:30 (last entry 21:15). The venues are Jozankei Shrine (a special evening visit for overnight guests only) and the whole hot spring town, and admission is free.

The evening visit to the shrine requires an invitation ticket handed out by lodgings. The details of the displays will be announced later on the official website and social media, so this article does not describe them (Jozankei Tourist Association, New Yukitoro 2027, checked 2026-10-07).

If you drive, the official site points to the Times Jozankei Tourist Parking lot: ¥500 per day, open 24 hours, 54 spaces. Nothing is said about large vehicles, so before departure, ask the Jozankei Tourist Association (011-598-2012) whether a campervan can enter (same official page, checked 2026-10-07). For walking around the hot spring town, see Touring Jozankei by campervan.

What to eat and how to walk in Sapporo in winter? Seven food categories from the official guide, and a warning about falls on snowy roads

For food, this article stays within what public guides say and names no restaurants. The gourmet section of Welcome to Sapporo lists seven categories: ramen, soup curry, Genghis Khan (grilled lamb), seafood izakaya, sushi, yakiniku, and sweets (Welcome to Sapporo, Gourmet, checked 2026-10-07).

That page does not recommend particular dishes for winter. Use the official restaurant listings and check opening hours and regular closing days before you choose.

What to know first about walking is the risk of falling. According to the Sapporo City Fire Department, 2,060 people in Sapporo were taken to hospital by ambulance after falling on their own on snowy roads in winter 2025-26 (November to March). How to choose shoes and anti-slip gear is covered in our article “Shoes and what to pack for a winter trip to Hokkaido” (Sapporo City Fire Department, summary of ambulance transports for “falls on snowy roads,” fiscal 2025 (Reiwa 7), preliminary figures, checked 2026-10-05).

What is there in Sapporo from spring to autumn? Lilacs, YOSAKOI, the Summer Festival, Autumn Fest, and fall colors

Lilacs in Odori Park

From spring to autumn, Odori Park is the star. The Sapporo Lilac Festival ran from May 20 to 31 in 2026 (until May 24 at Odori 5-chome), and the official site says about 400 lilac trees bloom at the Odori site. As of 2026-10-07, the 2027 dates have not been posted officially (Sapporo Lilac Festival official site, checked 2026-10-07).

The 35th YOSAKOI Soran Festival was held from Wednesday, June 10 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, at 17 sites in Sapporo, with 2,285,700 spectators. The dates for 2027 (the 36th) are not posted on the official site (YOSAKOI Soran Festival, results, checked 2026-10-07). For parking near the venues, see YOSAKOI Soran Festival by campervan.

In summer, the Odori Beer Garden of the Sapporo Summer Festival ran from July 23 to August 18 in 2026. Dates change every year, so wait for the announcement for the year you visit (Summer Festival by campervan, official site checked 2026-08-29). In autumn, the Sapporo Autumn Fest was held from September 11 to October 3 in 2026, at Odori Park, 4-chome to 11-chome west (Autumn Fest by campervan, official site checked 2026-08-14).

For fall colors, the official site introduces nine spots in Sapporo: Odori Park, Nakajima Park, the Hokkaido University ginkgo avenue, Takino Suzuran Hills Park, Benisakura Park, Toyohira Park, Hiraoka Arboretum, Monan Park, and Maruyama Park (Welcome to Sapporo, autumn leaves in Sapporo, posted and updated 2024-11-06, checked 2026-10-07). The peak shifts from year to year, so check the official updates for the week you travel.

How do you get from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo? The Rapid Airport takes 37 minutes at the fastest, then subway and streetcar in the city

From New Chitose Airport to Sapporo Station, the JR Rapid “Airport” takes 37 minutes at the fastest, and the Special Rapid takes 33 minutes at the fastest. The fare between Sapporo and New Chitose Airport is ¥1,230, and during the day (9:00–16:00) six trains run per hour (JR Hokkaido Rapid Airport, checked 2026-10-07). If you use the reserved-seat “u-Seat,” a reserved-seat charge is added to the fare.

In the city, you get around by subway and streetcar. According to the fare table of the Sapporo City Transportation Bureau, updated on April 1, 2026, subway fares run from ¥210 for 1 zone to ¥380 for 6 zones, and the streetcar is ¥230 for adults (Sapporo City Transportation Bureau, fares, checked 2026-10-07). The subway-only one-day pass is ¥830 for adults, and the Donichika Ticket, valid on weekends, holidays, and the year-end and New Year period (December 29 to January 3), is ¥520 for adults. Both are listed as cash-only purchases (Sapporo City Transportation Bureau, ticket guide, checked 2026-10-07).

Where do you park if you come by campervan? From a suburban RV park, it is 13–18 minutes to the city center

Sapporo has three RV parks certified by the Japan RV Association: RV Park Teine Sanroku in Teine-ku, and Sapporo Koganeyu Sakura RV Park and RV Park outdoor base TRIOUT in Minami-ku. There are none in the city center. Spaces with power hookups are small in number: up to 4 vehicles at Teine Sanroku, 4 at Koganeyu Sakura, and 2 spaces at TRIOUT. We could not confirm winter operation at any of the three from official sources, so ask when you call to book (Sapporo RV parks, checked 2026-08-04).

Distances and times were calculated from OpenStreetMap road data (OSRM), for snow-free conditions with no breaks. The RV park locations are approximate coordinates from their addresses, so expect a few minutes of difference (calculated 2026-10-07).

Source: OSRM (https://router.project-osrm.org/), snow-free conditions, no breaks, calculated 2026-10-07

On the day you pick up your vehicle at New Chitose Airport, the RV park is around 60km away. That fits within this site’s guideline of 200km and 9 hours of driving per day (this is not an official standard, and we do not plan routes that stretch the limit). In winter, snowy roads take longer than shown, and on January 15 the sun sets at 16:24. Pick up the vehicle in the morning, add time for breaks and a buffer, and plan to reach the RV park before sunset.

The reason not to take the vehicle downtown comes from the venues’ own guidance. The Snow Festival and White Illumination sites have no parking, and visitors are expected to use public transport (see our articles on the Snow Festival and the Illumination introduced in earlier sections). Ask when you book how to get from the RV park to the nearest subway station. For how to build a 10-day winter trip, see A 10-day winter itinerary around Hokkaido, and for the nearest bases to winter venues, see 14 winter events in Hokkaido.
