Hokkaido Winter Events 2027: 14 on a Map, With Where to Sleep Nearby

14 winter events across Hokkaido, laid out so you can pick by place. 11 have published their 2027 dates; 3 have not announced yet. Every date here was checked against the organiser’s or the local government’s own website (as of 17 September 2026).

One thing to know before you plan a driving trip: 6 of these events have no visitor parking at the venue. The organisers say so themselves. Turn up by car and you will be hunting for a space in a cold city centre. So each event below also shows the nearest place you can legally sleep in your vehicle, and how far away it is.

When you come changes how much you can see

Lay the dates side by side and Hokkaido’s winter splits into two halves.

At the busiest point 9 run at once. Bar length shows how long each one lasts.

The busiest day is 2月6日, when 9 events run at the same time. Come that week and you can cross the island seeing one after another. Hotels and roads will be busy too.

Late January is the quiet opposite. Only the long-running events are open then — the Sounkyo ice waterfall festival, Jozankei’s new light event, the Shikotsuko ice festival and Shikaribetsu Kotan all last a month or more. If you would rather take your time over each one, that is the window.

Events with no parking at the venue

6 events state on their official sites that there is no visitor parking. At the Tsudome site of the Sapporo Snow Festival there is not even a place to stop and drop someone off.

If you are travelling by campervan, treat these 6 as events you park away from. There is an RV park about 6 km from the Sapporo Snow Festival site. Leave the vehicle there, take the subway or a bus in, and you skip the whole problem.

Worth saying plainly: not one venue states that large vehicles are welcome. The Shikotsuko ice festival does have a coach fare (¥2,000), so a larger vehicle probably fits — but nothing on the site mentions campervans, so we cannot promise it. If it matters to your trip, call ahead.

Why southern Hokkaido is not on this list. Hakodate Christmas Fantasy usually runs from 29 November to 25 December. The dates for the 2026 edition have not been published on Hakodate’s official tourism site yet (checked 18 September 2026). There is no visitor parking at the venue, so the way to do it is to leave the vehicle at an RV park in the city and take the tram. We cover it in Hakodate Christmas Fantasy by Campervan.

Every place to sleep listed here is open in winter. Hokkaido has 60 RV parks, but 18 of them close for the season. The site nearest a venue is often one of the closed ones — the Akaigawa site that comes up for Jozankei and Otaru, and Itoi-no-mori near Lake Shikotsu, both shut in winter. We only list places we could confirm as open year-round on the operator’s own page or on the Japan RV Association site, and we say so where a place is only open part of the season (checked 16 September 2026).

One event is changing, three have not announced

Two warnings before you book anything.

Jozankei first. The hand-made snow candles of Yukitouro, which ran for fifteen winters, ended in February 2026. From January 2027 it becomes something different, announced by the Jozankei tourist association as “New Yukitouro”. Most other websites still show the old snow candles, so if you go expecting the photos you have seen, you will find something else.

Second, 3 events have not published 2027 dates yet. Lake Akan’s “Fuyu Hanabi” usually runs 1 February to 1 March, and Tokachigawa’s Sairinka usually late January to mid February — but neither has confirmed for 2027. Wait for the official announcement before you build a trip around them.

The Obihiro ice festival needs care too. The tourism association’s page has been updated to 29–31 January 2027, but the parking section of that same page still shows last year’s dates. Do not read the parking information as 2027.

What else there is to do, once you have seen the ice

Tokachi, in the east, gets more clear winter days than most of Hokkaido — locals call it Tokachi-bare. Snow on the ground and an open sky above it, which makes being outside pleasant rather than punishing.

Shikaribetsu Kotan is a village of snow and ice built on the frozen surface of a lake 810 m up — the highest lake in Hokkaido. There is an ice bar inside an igloo and candlelight in an ice chapel, and it is better after dark. It runs from 28 January to 14 March, long enough that it is easy to fit in.

Beyond that, Tokachi has dog sledding after dark, ice fishing for smelt, and snow rafting behind a snowmobile. There is also a sauna on the riverbank that only exists in winter, where you move between −20°C air and a 90°C wood-fired room. Moving Inn on winter in Tokachi has the details.

Driving Hokkaido in winter

There are far fewer places to sleep in a vehicle in winter than in summer. Only some of Hokkaido’s RV parks stay open, and we have confirmed which ones on their own websites. Frequently asked questions

When are the most winter events on?

Around 2月6日, when 9 run at once. That is also the most crowded time. For a quieter trip, late January has the long-running events without the crush.

Can I park at the venues?

6 of the 14 state there is no visitor parking. Where there is parking, no venue says large vehicles are welcome. In a campervan, base yourself at a nearby place to sleep and take public transport in.

Do they charge admission?

Most are free. The Sapporo Snow Festival, Asahikawa Winter Festival, Otaru Snow Light Path, Jozankei’s New Yukitouro, Sapporo White Illumination and Hakodate Christmas Fantasy are all confirmed free on their official sites. Shikaribetsu Kotan asks for a ¥600 season pass (elementary school age and above) as a contribution.

What about the events with no 2027 dates?

3 have not announced. The usual timing is in the text above, but it is last year’s pattern, not a promise. Check the official site before you fix your plans.

Is Jozankei’s Yukitouro the same as before?

No. The hand-made snow candles ended in February 2026. From January 2027 it is a different event called New Yukitouro, running 20 January to 28 February, 18:00–21:30, free.
