The 2026 Hakodate Christmas Fantasy runs from Tuesday, December 1 to Friday, December 25. The dates are listed on the official site (Hakodate Christmas Fantasy official site, checked 2026-10-07). A large tree floats on the sea in front of the Red Brick Warehouses, and fireworks go up at 18:00 every evening. Admission is free.

Details such as the lighting times are still at the stage where the organizers say they will “announce them as they are decided.” Every time in this article is labeled as a 2025 result. The venue has no dedicated parking lot, and the organizers themselves recommend public transportation. If you come by campervan, the basic plan is to leave the vehicle at an RV park and head to the venue by streetcar or on foot. Parking and RV parks are covered in the second half.

Going to the Hakodate Christmas Fantasy?

  • Where to rent: Rent a campervan at Hakodate Airport. The venue is about 25 minutes by car from the airport.
  • Where to stay: Hakodate has four certified RV parks; SHOWA BASE closes in winter (see the overnight section below).

The top page of the official site lists the dates as “December 1 (Tue) to December 25 (Fri), 2026” (dated July 10, 2026). The same page also says “the schedule may change or the event may be canceled due to weather and other conditions” (official site, checked 2026-10-07).

The Hokkaido Tourism Organization’s travel site also gives the period as 2026/12/1-12/25 with free admission (HOKKAIDO LOVE! listing, checked 2026-10-07).

The 2025 column shows figures from last year’s official pages. They will not necessarily be the same in 2026. For items marked “not yet announced” in the 2026 column, wait for the official site to publish them.

Where is the venue, and when does the lighting start? The floating tree and the 18:00 fireworks

The venue is on the sea in front of the Red Brick Warehouses in Suehiro-cho, Hakodate. The official venue information gives it as “on the sea in front of the Red Brick Warehouses, Suehiro-cho, Hakodate, Hokkaido” (venue information, checked 2026-10-07). The tree floats on the water, with the buildings of the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse lined up right behind it.

In 2025, the tree was lit in two sessions: 16:30-17:45 and 18:00-22:00. The 18:00 session is essentially a re-lighting, and the fireworks coincide with it. The official site says that whether the fireworks go ahead is decided on site, depending on wind and other launch conditions (checked 2026-10-07).

The “Premium Red Tree,” when the whole tree turns red, ran for 15 minutes each starting at 18:30, 19:30 and 20:30 in 2025. If you would rather not watch at fireworks time, you can aim for one of the red tree sessions. The official site also states that small unmanned aircraft such as drones are prohibited at the venue for safety (checked 2026-10-07).

What can you see? The tree, fireworks, soup bar, and sponsor events

A large tree floating on the sea

According to the Hokkaido Tourism Organization, the tree floats on the sea in the Hakodate Bay Area, is lit as dusk falls, and stands out against the harbor night view alongside the red brick buildings (HOKKAIDO LOVE!, checked 2026-10-07). I have not included figures such as the number of light bulbs, because they cannot be confirmed from official sources.

Fireworks every evening at 18:00

Fireworks go up in time with the 18:00 re-lighting of the illuminations. In 2025 there were 5 days of “JRA Special Fireworks,” specially sponsored by JRA Hakodate Racecourse: November 29, November 30, December 21, December 24 and December 25, all starting at 18:00 (official site, Events, checked 2026-10-07). The special days for 2026 have not been announced.

Eating at the venue: the soup bar on the main street

In 2025, the soup bar stood on the sidewalk of the venue’s main street, open 16:30-20:00, at ¥700 per cup (tax included). On the day, you buy a voucher for one cup of soup at an automatic ticket machine (cash only) or with each shop’s PayPay QR code (official soup bar page, checked 2026-10-07). It closes earlier than the 20:30 red tree session, so have your soup first.

In 2025, there was a photo spot with a “Hakodate” lettered monument and laser lighting on the canal at BAY Hakodate Event Plaza, set up from about 16:30 to about 22:00 (official site, Events, checked 2026-10-07). Sponsor event times differ by day, and the official site says they may be canceled or changed depending on the weather.

Is it crowded? When should you go? Crowd guidance and how to spend the evening

I could not find any official figures showing how crowded it gets, such as visitor numbers, either on the official site or in the tourism organization’s listing (checked 2026-10-07).

What I could confirm is that traffic restrictions in 2025 ran 16:00-20:30, and that the official site writes “there is little parking nearby, so please use public transportation” and “traffic congestion is expected” (venue information, checked 2026-10-07).

From here on is this site’s own assessment, with no official figures behind it. It is safest to plan on the hours around the 18:00 fireworks being when people gather in front of the tree. If the fireworks are not a priority, the red tree sessions at 19:30 and 20:30 fall at a different time from the fireworks.

Here is one example of how to spend an evening, based on the 2025 times.

  • Check in at the RV park while it is still light, and test the heater and power
  • Head to the Bay Area by streetcar or on foot before the lighting starts at 16:30
  • Watch the 18:00 re-lighting and fireworks. On days you skip the fireworks, avoid this window and eat and shop at the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse
  • Buy your soup before the soup bar closes at 20:00
  • See the Premium Red Tree at 19:30 or 20:30, then return to your base by streetcar or taxi

How cold is Hakodate in December? What to wear, and icy roads at night

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s normals (1991-2020), Hakodate’s December averages a daily high of 3.2°C and a daily low of -3.6°C. By ten-day period, it gets colder toward the end of the month. Normals are a guide to a typical year, not a forecast for any given day.

Part of DecemberAverage daily highAverage daily low
Early December4.7°C-2.2°C
Mid-December2.7°C-4.0°C
Late December2.2°C-4.5°C
December overall3.2°C-3.6°C
Source: Japan Meteorological Agency normals (Hakodate, 1991-2020) https://www.data.jma.go.jp/stats/etrn/view/nml_sfc_10d.php?prec_no=23&block_no=47430 , checked 2026-09-24. The normal for maximum snow depth in December is 22 cm

The lighting runs from evening into the night, which is colder than the daily highs in this table. The tourism organization’s description also calls the venue “in the cold sea breeze.” Since you will be looking at a tree on the sea, plan for wind, and bring warm outerwear, gloves and shoes that do not slip. For temperatures and gear by month, see Hokkaido in December: temperatures and what to wear, and for winter as a whole, Hokkaido winter temperatures.

Watch the road surface too. Hakodate gets less snow than Sapporo, but snow melted during the day and wet roads can freeze again from the evening. The area from the Bay Area to Motomachi has many slopes, and a tall, heavy campervan is harder than an ordinary car to start and stop on an icy hill. Do not drive at night. This is what leads to the base approach in the second half.

How do you get there from Hakodate Station or by streetcar? Getting there by public transportation

According to the official venue information, by streetcar you get off at the Hakodate Streetcar “Jujigai” stop and walk about 5 minutes; by bus, it is about 2 minutes on foot from the Hakodate Bus “Meijikan-mae” stop. For a taxi, tell the driver your destination is “the Christmas Fantasy venue” (venue information, checked 2026-10-07).

For the streetcar, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse guide says “take a streetcar bound for Yachigashira or Dokku-mae, and the Jujigai stop is about 5 minutes away” (Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse access, checked 2026-10-07). The Hokkaido Tourism Organization’s listing gives about 10 minutes on foot from JR Hakodate Station and about 25 minutes by car from Hakodate Airport (checked 2026-10-07).

Is there parking near the venue that can take a campervan?

There is no dedicated event parking. The tourism organization’s listing also gives parking as “none,” saying there are paid lots nearby but with limited spaces, and that public transportation is recommended (checked 2026-10-07).

The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse guide says that by car you should use “Times Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse Parking.” The rate is ¥600 for the first hour and ¥300 for each additional 30 minutes. Spending ¥1,000 or more gets you up to 2 hours free, and the nighttime maximum (18:00 to 09:00 the next day) is ¥500 (Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse official site, checked 2026-10-07).

The official page does not state the number of spaces or any vehicle height or length limit. Whether a Cabcon over 5 m long or a tall Vancon can get in depends on conditions on the day.

During the event, the Bay Area lots fill up with ordinary cars before and after the lighting. In December, snow piles up and reduces the usable spaces, and snowbanks on the shoulders narrow the roads. Circling in a large vehicle looking for a space is a risk in itself. Drop the idea of parking right at the venue and plan around the base approach in the next section.

Where can you stay overnight in your vehicle? RV parks near Hakodate Station and facilities usable in winter

There are 4 certified RV parks in Hakodate city. They are “SHOGUN VILLA HAKODATE RV PARK” in Sakaemachi (0.9 km straight-line from Hakodate Station, 2 spaces, online booking only, open 365 days), “RV Park Hakodate Ryokuen-dori” in Hon-dori (4.7 km, 10 spaces, no closing days), “RV Park Hakodate Hiyoshi” in Hiyoshi-cho (5.3 km, 3 spaces, may close on irregular days), and “RV Park HAKODATE SHOWA BASE” in Showa-cho.

SHOWA BASE is closed in winter, so it is not available in December (this site’s check of 10 overnight-parking spots in Hakodate, checked 2026-09-20).

SHOGUN VILLA is the closest to the venue. The facility’s guide says it is a 7-minute walk from the Uoichiba-dori streetcar stop. It has only 2 spaces, so if you cannot get one, switch to Ryokuen-dori. Winter operation and rates for both can change, so confirm by phone or on the website when you book.

The routine is to check in while it is still light, connect to power, and leave with the heater running and the vehicle warm. Take the streetcar or a taxi to the Bay Area, see the lighting and fireworks, and return by public transportation. This setup is also the safe one, since you do not drive icy night roads yourself. Please avoid overnight stays in your vehicle on the streets or in the parking lots around the venue. These are sightseeing parking lots, and staying on the street in winter also gets in the way of snow removal. For overnight-parking spots across Hakodate and southern Hokkaido, see the Hakodate and Southern Hokkaido Campervan Guide.

Can you see the Mt. Hakodate night view and the Goryokaku illumination on the same night?

The Mt. Hakodate Ropeway operates on its October 1 to April 19 schedule, with the last ride up at 20:30 and the last ride down at 21:00 (Mt. Hakodate Ropeway official site, checked 2026-10-07). The official site also says “the summit observatory is expected to be very crowded for 1 to 2 hours from sunset and the start of the night view.” The tree’s 18:00 fireworks overlap with the night view hours, so decide in advance whether to go up for the night view first or after the fireworks.

Do not plan to drive up to the summit; assume the ropeway. Winter road closures on the road to the summit are set year by year, so check the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway official site before you leave.

There is also the “Goryokaku Star Dream Illumination” at Goryokaku. About 2,000 bulbs trace the roughly 1.8 km outer edge of the moat, and the star shape can be seen from the observation deck of Goryokaku Tower. For 2025 it was listed as December 1, 2025 to February 28, 2026, lit from sunset until 19:00, with Goryokaku Tower open until 18:00 (HOKKAIDO LOVE! listing, checked 2026-10-07). The dates for 2026-27 have not been confirmed.

If you rent a campervan, start by checking whether it is available in winter

If you rent a campervan to go to Hakodate, the first thing to confirm is whether the company rents out vehicles in winter. Some companies pause rentals in winter, and those that do rent differ in studless tires and cold-climate equipment. Whether a vehicle has an FF heater greatly affects how comfortable winter overnight stays are. Check before you book.

The companies you can rent from in Hakodate and the conditions at each base are listed in the Complete Comparison of Hakodate Campervan Rentals. If you pick up at the airport, see How to Rent a Campervan at Hakodate Airport. If you spend the daytime driving around Onuma and southern Hokkaido and return to a base in Hakodate in the evening, you can fit in both the event and a winter drive.

Does it end on December 25? If you extend your trip to the New Year

The tree is lit until December 25 (official site, checked 2026-10-07). If your trip in Hokkaido runs through the New Year, one option is to spend your Hakodate evening in December and then move on to another area. The New Year rules and first sunrise are covered in the Hokkaido New Year Campervan Trip Guide.

The nearest southern Hokkaido base from Hakodate is Onuma. The scenery of Mt. Komagatake and the lake, and winter overnight stays, are in the Onuma Park Campervan Guide. On long driving days, cap it at 200 km and 9 hours of driving per day. This is a guideline this site set for driving safety, not an official standard. Winter days are short, and on snowy roads it takes longer than the map says.

For winter travel as a whole, see the Hokkaido Campervan Winter Travel Guide, and for worries about snowy roads and heating, see Before You Travel Winter Hokkaido by Campervan.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

When is the 2026 Hakodate Christmas Fantasy?

It runs from Tuesday, December 1 to Friday, December 25, 2026, as announced on the official site (checked 2026-10-07). Details such as the lighting times are still at the stage where the organizers say they will “announce them as they are decided.”

Where is the venue, and when does the lighting start?

The venue is on the sea in front of the Red Brick Warehouses in Suehiro-cho, Hakodate. In 2025, the lighting ran 16:30-17:45 and 18:00-22:00, with a re-lighting and fireworks at 18:00. Wait for the official announcement for the 2026 times.

What can I see?

A large tree floating on the sea, fireworks every evening at 18:00, and the Premium Red Tree, when the whole tree turns red (3 times a day, 15 minutes each, in 2025). In 2025 there was also a soup bar (¥700 per cup) and sponsor events.

Are there times when it gets crowded?

I could not confirm any official figures on crowding. In 2025 there were traffic restrictions from 16:00 to 20:30, and the official site says congestion is expected. It is easier to get around if you treat the hours around the 18:00 fireworks as when people gather, and either arrive early or time your visit to the 19:30 or 20:30 red tree sessions. This is this site’s own assessment.

How cold is Hakodate in December, and what should I wear?

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s normals, December averages a daily high of 3.2°C and a daily low of -3.6°C. The lighting is in the evening and later, with sea wind. Bring warm outerwear, gloves and shoes that do not slip.

How do I get there from Hakodate Station?

It is about a 5-minute walk from the “Jujigai” streetcar stop, or about a 2-minute walk from the “Meijikan-mae” bus stop. The tourism organization’s listing gives about 10 minutes on foot from JR Hakodate Station.

Is there parking for campervans at the venue?

There is no dedicated event parking. There is the Times lot at the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, but the official page does not state its capacity or vehicle size limits, so it is not certain that a large vehicle can park there. Leaving your vehicle at an RV park and heading to the venue from there is the realistic approach.

Can I stay overnight in my vehicle around the venue?

Please avoid it. These are sightseeing parking lots, and staying on the street in winter also gets in the way of snow removal. There are 4 certified RV parks in Hakodate city, and those usable in December include SHOGUN VILLA, Ryokuen-dori and Hiyoshi (SHOWA BASE is closed in winter, checked 2026-09-20).

Can I see the Mt. Hakodate night view and the Goryokaku illumination on the same night?

Yes. The Mt. Hakodate Ropeway’s last ride up is at 20:30 and last ride down at 21:00 (checked 2026-10-07). The official site says the summit observatory is crowded for 1 to 2 hours from the start of the night view. The dates of the Goryokaku Star Dream Illumination for 2026-27 have not been confirmed.

What should I do after December 25?

The tree is lit until December 25. If you continue your trip through the New Year, one option is to move to a southern Hokkaido base such as Onuma. On long drives, cap it at 200 km and 9 hours of driving per day (a guideline of this site, not an official standard).
