Where to Sleep in Your Vehicle in Hakodate: 10 Places, Only 1 Closed in Winter | Distance from Hakodate Station and 5 Gas Stations Open 24 Hours

We checked every place to sleep in a vehicle around Hakodate against official listings, one by one. There are 4 certified RV parks in Hakodate city, 2 in Hokuto, 2 in Nanae, and 1 in Kikonai, plus 1 “Yu-You Park” where you can park overnight at a hot spring hotel. That makes 10 places in total. Only 1 of them closes in winter; the other 9 are usable in both December and January.

The table shows how far each one is from Hakodate Station, what it costs, how it runs in winter, and whether you book by phone or online. We also added the 4 roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) with 24-hour toilets and the opening hours of 33 gas stations in Hakodate, Hokuto, and Nanae. Information was checked on September 20, 2026. Prices and closures change, so look at each facility’s official page before you go. You can jump from the table to each facility.

Price guide | From the ¥2,000 range per night, with differences depending on whether electricity is included

RV parks around Hakodate fall in the range of ¥2,000 to ¥4,000 per vehicle per night. The cheapest are Ryokuen-dori in the city and Hokuto at around ¥2,000, and the most expensive are Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station Front and Onuma at ¥4,000, but those two include electricity. Compared with places that charge separately for electricity, the real difference is smaller.

One thing to watch: the price can differ for the same facility depending on the source. Ryokuen-dori is listed as “from ¥2,500” on the JRVA official site and “¥2,000” on the Kurumatabi official site. Confirming by phone when you book is the most reliable way.

Distances are straight-line from Hakodate Station, so the actual road distance is longer. The “Winter” column shows whether the official page states a closure.

We checked the list of certified RV parks on the JRVA official site (RV-Park.jp) and the Kurumatabi official site. Hakodate Hiyoshi and SHOGUN VILLA are new facilities certified in September 2026, and both are in Hakodate city. That brings the total to 4 in Hakodate city alone.

Staying in the city | 2 downtown, 2 in Yunokawa

SHOGUN VILLA HAKODATE RV PARK is less than 1km from Hakodate Station. It is a lot of just 2 spaces next to an accommodation facility, with a 100V outlet, a toilet available 24 hours, and waste pickup. It is a 7-minute walk from the Uoichiba-dori tram stop. This is the only place where you can leave your vehicle and walk to Mount Hakodate and the western district. Booking is online only, and check-in is from 13:00 to 23:00. The official site states it is open 365 days a year.

RV Park Hakodate Ryokuen-dori is in Hondori 3-chome, 4.7km from Hakodate Station. With 10 spaces it has the most in the city, and its closure period is listed as “none in particular.” Electricity costs ¥500 (¥300 for Kurumatabi Club members). Check-in is from 14:00 to 18:00. If you will arrive after 18:00, call ahead.

RV Park Hakodate Hiyoshi is in Hiyoshicho 3-chome, 5.3km from Hakodate Station. It has 3 spaces. The official site says: “We do not plan to set a closure period, but since one person runs it, it may close irregularly depending on bookings.” Booking is by phone only. The facility description mentions a hot spring and a convenience store within walking distance.

Yunokawa Onsen Hotel Amamiyakan is not an RV park but a “Yu-You Park,” a system where you park overnight in a hot spring hotel’s parking lot. It costs ¥3,000 per night and runs year-round, but it does not accept guests in peak season, so you need to inquire in advance. It works well if you want to soak in the Yunokawa hot springs and then stay right there.

RV Park HAKODATE SHOWA BASE is closed in winter. The reservation line is open all year, but you cannot stay there in winter. Prices and facilities are summarized in RV Park Hakodate Showa Base: rates, booking, and facilities.

Arriving by Shinkansen | 2 places near Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station

RV Park Hokuto is about 400m from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, and RV Park Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station Front is right in front of the station. Hokuto has 2 spaces at ¥2,750 with electricity included, and its official page says the toilet is “temporary but flush-type, with no bidet or heated seat.” Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station Front costs ¥4,000 with electricity included, and ¥6,000 for large vehicles. Both are open year-round, but Hokuto notes that it “may differ depending on snowfall.”

For how to enter Hokkaido by Shinkansen and rent a vehicle, see Renting a campervan after arriving in Hokkaido by Shinkansen. For renting at Hakodate Airport, see How to rent a campervan at Hakodate Airport.

Staying at Onuma | Hot spring water available 24 hours

RV Park Onuma is inside Onuma Quasi-National Park, with a view of both Mount Komagatake and Lake Onuma. It has 30 spaces. A 5m x 5m space with electricity is ¥4,000, and a space without electricity is ¥2,000. The official site says 28-degree drinkable hot spring water is available 24 hours, and a heated toilet is also open 24 hours. Those two features are why you do not need to worry about freezing in winter. Only the coin laundry is unavailable from December 1 to January 31.

Maple Campground, also in Nanae, has 4 campervan sites and accepts bookings from December to March (11:00-17:00). It costs ¥3,000 per vehicle, including 1 adult.

Heading to Matsumae and Esashi | Kikonai has the last RV park

Heading west from Hakodate toward Matsumae and Esashi, the only RV park along the way is Kikonai Misogi-no-Oka RV Park. There are no certified RV parks in Matsumae, Kaminokuni, or Esashi. It has 4 spaces at ¥2,970, with electricity, a 24-hour toilet, and year-round operation. For what the 6 roadside stations beyond Kikonai say about overnight stays, we check them one by one in Are there roadside stations in southern Hokkaido (Kikonai, Matsumae, Esashi) where you can sleep in your vehicle?.

Roadside stations with 24-hour toilets | 4 stations around Hakodate

Roadside stations are not places that accept overnight stays in vehicles, but they are worth knowing as places where you can use a toilet at night. We checked the official pages for 4 stations in Hakodate, Nanae, and Shikabe.

Roadside stationFrom Hakodate Station24-hour toiletParkingBuilding hours in winter

Shikabe Kanketsusen Park (Shikabe)27.5kmAvailable (stated officially)6 large, 40 standardDec 1 to Mar 19: 10:00-15:00 (until 17:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays), closed Wednesdays
Natowa Esan (Hakodate)31.2kmNot stated on the roadside station’s official page. The Hakodate city official page for the adjacent Esan Kaihin Park says “toilets (available 24 hours)”3 large, 109 standardOctober to March 9:00-17:00, restaurant closed December to March, closed Mondays

Only Natowa Esan does not state toilet hours on the roadside station’s official page. However, for the adjacent Esan Kaihin Park, the Hakodate city official page says “toilets (available 24 hours)” (checked 2026-09-21). Those are facilities on the park side, not the toilets inside the roadside station building, so if you plan to use them at night, confirm on site which toilet it is. The other 3 stations, which state it clearly, are the safer choice.

33 gas stations | 5 in Hakodate city stay open at night

There are 21 in Hakodate city, 7 in Hokuto, and 5 in Nanae. We checked opening hours on each company’s official store locator (September 17, 2026). The 24-hour stations are 5 apollostation locations in Hakodate city (the Hakodate Shindo, Distribution Center, Nakamichi, Minatomachi, and Shin Self Trappistine-dori stations; Nakamichi and Minatomachi close for just one hour, from 3:00 to 4:00). The Akamatsu Kaido station in Nanae and the Hokuto Kamiiso station in Hokuto are open from 6:00 to 24:00.

Most of the others open at 7 or 8 in the morning and close at 19 to 21 in the evening, and the Cosmo Oil in Toi, Hakodate is open from 9:00 to 17:00 and closed on Sundays and holidays. If you are leaving central Hakodate for Esan or Minamikayabe, it is safer to fill up in the city.

None of the companies state in their official store information whether they handle diesel or whether large vehicles such as campervans can enter. This does not turn up in searches, so we cannot write it in this article either. For how to think about gas stations, see Gas stations on a Hokkaido campervan trip.

Things to watch for in Hakodate in winter

Of the 10 places, only HAKODATE SHOWA BASE closes in winter, but even places listed as “year-round” carry notes. Hokuto may change with snowfall, Hiyoshi may close irregularly, and Amamiyakan does not accept guests in peak season. If you go in winter, call by the day before.

December is the season of the Hakodate Christmas Fantasy, and there is no dedicated parking lot around the venue, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. The overnight spots close to the venue are Ryokuen-dori or SHOGUN VILLA, 0.9km away. For RV parks that are open in winter across Hokkaido, see RV parks and roadside stations in Hokkaido where you can sleep in your vehicle in winter.

FAQ

Where is the closest place to sleep in a vehicle to Hakodate Station?

SHOGUN VILLA HAKODATE RV PARK. It is in Sakaemachi, 0.9km in a straight line from Hakodate Station. However, it has only 2 spaces, so if you cannot get one, the next option is Ryokuen-dori (10 spaces) at 4.7km.

Can I stay in January?

Yes. Of the 10 places, only HAKODATE SHOWA BASE is closed in winter. However, there are notes such as Hokuto’s “may differ depending on snowfall,” Hiyoshi’s irregular closures, and Amamiyakan’s no-stay peak season, so confirm by phone before you head out.

Is there a place where I can stay without a reservation?

Certified RV parks are basically by reservation. All 10 places in this article assume a reservation by phone or online. Roadside station parking lots are not places that accept overnight stays in vehicles, so we have not counted them as places where you can stay.

I want to soak in a hot spring before sleeping. What are my options?

Hotel Amamiyakan in Yunokawa Onsen accepts overnight parking as a Yu-You Park. For day-use bathing at other hotels, we could not find the hours or prices on their official pages in this check, so they are not included in this article.

Are the prices as listed?

They can differ depending on the source. Ryokuen-dori is listed as from ¥2,500 on the JRVA official site and ¥2,000 on the Kurumatabi official site. The prices in the table are the official listings as of September 20, 2026, so always confirm when you book.

Facility information in this article was checked on the JRVA official site (RV-Park.jp), the Kurumatabi official site, the official pages of each facility and roadside station, and each oil company’s store locator (facilities on September 20, 2026; gas stations on September 17, 2026).
