“I want to pick it up in Shin-Chitose and return it in Hakodate.” “I don’t want to drive all the way back to Sapporo after touring northern Hokkaido from Asahikawa.” Many people searching for campervan rentals in Hokkaido have these wishes, but the number of operators who actually offer one-way (drop-off) returns is limited.
This article summarises the operators in Hokkaido that offer one-way campervan returns, the available routes, estimated surcharges, alternatives when one-way is not available, and how to combine the trip with a ferry itinerary.

How One-Way (Drop-Off) Returns Work
A one-way rental means returning the campervan to a different location from where you picked it up — in other words, "pick up at Point A, return at Point B." This is also called a "one-way" plan.
With a standard rental, you must return the vehicle to the same location. If you pick it up in Asahikawa, you must drive back to Asahikawa to return it. With a one-way option, you can pick up in Asahikawa, drive through northern Hokkaido in one direction, and return the vehicle directly in Shin-Chitose (Sapporo), eliminating unnecessary backtracking.
National rental car companies (such as Toyota Rent a Car) operate nationwide and can handle one-way returns relatively flexibly, but campervan rental operators in Hokkaido tend to be independent businesses with limited fleets. Because repositioning costs are high, the routes they can accommodate are limited. Never assume "it's within Hokkaido, so of course they can do it" — always confirm before booking.

Let's start with the big picture. Of the 42 rental bases in our site's database (as of September 21, 2026), 11 listed one-way returns as available. On October 5, 2026 we added Carsta Rent-a-Car Memanbetsu Airport after checking its one-way option (New Chitose ↔ Memanbetsu Airport, ¥9,900) on its official site, so this table lists 12 bases. Routes and fees are copied exactly as each operator lists them (confirm details on each company's official page before booking). A filtered list of bases that support one-way returns is available at One-Way-Ready Rental Bases.
| Base | Area | One-Way Listing |
|---|---|---|
| SKY TENT Car Rental | Sapporo | Available (Minami-Chitose Station or Sapporo Station) |
| Sapporo Campervan Rental Center (Sapporo C.R.C.) | Sapporo | Available (Shin-Sapporo Station transfer; choose pick-up/return location from Sapporo office) |
| Shin-Chitose Campervan Rental Center (Shin-Chitose CRC) | Chitose (in-airport) | Available (choose pick-up/return location between the Hokkaido New Chitose Airport store and New Chitose Airport transfer) |
| Hokkaido Nomad Rent-a-Car, Chitose | Chitose | Available (major cities/airports in Hokkaido; quote required) |
| Ureska Sapporo BASE | Ebetsu | One-way returns available between locations (¥16,500 tax incl.) |
| Camping Lines Hokkaido, Sapporo BASE | Ebetsu | Available (between Asahikawa BASE and Sapporo BASE, ¥16,500) |
| Asahikawa BASE | Asahikawa | Available (between Asahikawa BASE and Sapporo BASE, ¥16,500) |
| Tabisuru Kuruma, New Chitose Airport BASE | Chitose (near airport) | Available (fee on inquiry) |
| Japan Road Trip Sapporo | Sapporo | Available (Sapporo Station area to New Chitose, etc.) |
| Moving Inn New Chitose Airport | Chitose | Available (Sapporo Station area to New Chitose, etc.) |
| Japan Road Trip New Chitose Airport | Chitose | Available (Sapporo Station area to New Chitose, etc.) |
| Carsta Rent-a-Car Memanbetsu Airport | Memanbetsu (Ozora) | Available (between the New Chitose Airport Rinku Eniwa Megumino branch and Memanbetsu Airport, ¥9,900 option; campervans are part of the summer fleet, so confirm the vehicle when booking) |
The setups fall into three patterns. Between two of the operator's own bases (Camping Lines Hokkaido between Asahikawa and Sapporo, Ureska, Japan Road Trip between the Sapporo Station area and New Chitose Airport, Sapporo C.R.C. with Shin-Chitose C.R.C., and Carsta Rent-a-Car between New Chitose and Memanbetsu Airport); returning at a station or the airport (SKY TENT's Minami-Chitose Station or Sapporo Station); and quote-based (Nomad Rent-a-Car's major Hokkaido cities/airports, and Tabisuru Kuruma). The only long-distance one-way route with an official listing is Carsta Rent-a-Car's New Chitose Airport Rinku Eniwa Megumino ↔ Memanbetsu Airport (¥9,900). Dropping off in Hakodate or Kushiro is not listed by any operator in this table. Details for each company follow below.
Camping Lines Hokkaido
This operator has two bases in Hokkaido — Asahikawa BASE and Sapporo BASE — and supports one-way returns between them. The confirmed routes and fees as of 2026 (verified May 2026) are as follows.
| Route | One-Way Fee (tax incl.) |
|---|---|
| Asahikawa BASE → Sapporo BASE | ¥16,500 |
| Sapporo BASE → Asahikawa BASE | ¥16,500 |
You can pick up the campervan at Asahikawa Airport or Asahikawa Station, drive through Biei, Furano, and northern Hokkaido in one direction, and return it at Sapporo (Shin-Chitose Airport) on the last day. This is ideal for Asahikawa IN / Shin-Chitose OUT itineraries and eliminates the wasted round trip between Asahikawa and Shin-Chitose. See also our Asahikawa Campervan Rental Comparison.
Fuji Cars Japan
In Hokkaido, Fujicars Japan rents vehicles only at its Chitose Rental Station (Chitose City), and one-way drop-offs (returning the vehicle somewhere else) are not available. Plan a round trip that ends back at the Chitose store (confirmed with the store in October 2026).
Other Operators
Most operators in Hokkaido only accept returns to the original pick-up location. Small independent operators cannot absorb repositioning costs, so one-way options are generally not available. If a one-way return is a prerequisite for your itinerary, confirm with each operator before booking: "Can I do a one-way return?", "What routes do you support?", and "How much is the surcharge?"
Recommended Routes Using One-Way Returns
Asahikawa IN → Northern Hokkaido Loop → Shin-Chitose OUT (6 days / 5 nights)
One of the most popular campervan routes in Hokkaido, and the pattern where one-way returns are most useful. Pick up the campervan at Asahikawa Airport, drive through the great outdoors of northern Hokkaido in one direction, and fly home from Shin-Chitose.
| Day | Suggested Itinerary |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Pick up at Asahikawa Airport → Asahidake Ropeway / Asahiyama Zoo |
| Day 2 | Biei rolling hills → Farm Tomita (Furano) |
| Day 3 | Furano → Rumoi → northbound along the Sea of Japan Orolon Line |
| Day 4 | Wakkanai / Cape Soya (Japan's northernmost point) |
| Day 5 | Wakkanai → southbound via Nayoro / Shibetsu |
| Day 6 | Return at Sapporo BASE → depart from Shin-Chitose Airport |
Without a one-way return, you would need to drive back from Wakkanai to Asahikawa (approx. 230 km) or retrace the same route. One-way returns make the trip flow naturally and reduce total driving time.
Shin-Chitose IN → Central/Southern Hokkaido → Hakodate OUT (5 days / 4 nights)
Pick up the campervan at Shin-Chitose Airport and head south through Lake Toya, Niseko, Otaru, and Hakodate. This itinerary pairs well with taking the ferry from Hakodate to Aomori.
| Day | Suggested Itinerary |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Pick up at Shin-Chitose → Lake Shikotsu / Lake Toya area |
| Day 2 | Lake Toya → Niseko / Kutchan (views of Mt. Yotei) |
| Day 3 | Niseko → Otaru (canal / sushi) |
| Day 4 | Otaru → Oshamambe → Onuma Quasi-National Park |
| Day 5 | Hakodate (morning market / Goryokaku) → return → Hakodate Airport or Seikan Ferry |
As of now, no operator has been confirmed to support one-way returns between Shin-Chitose and Hakodate. For Hakodate-based rentals, see our Hakodate Campervan Rental Comparison; for Shin-Chitose operators, see Campervan Rental Near Shin-Chitose Airport.
Asahikawa IN → Eastern Hokkaido Loop → Kushiro OUT (7 days / 6 nights)
One of the longest loop routes in Hokkaido — ideal if a one-way return is available. Drive from Asahikawa through Sounkyo, Kitami, Abashiri, and the Shiretoko Peninsula, then through the Kushiro Marshland and return the campervan in Kushiro. As of now, no one-way plan has been confirmed for a Kushiro return, so direct enquiry to operators is essential.
How to Book a One-Way Return
Booking a one-way return involves a few extra steps compared to a standard rental. Knowing the process in advance will help you move smoothly on the day.
STEP 1: Pre-Booking Confirmation
First, call or email the operator to ask: "Is a one-way return from [pick-up location] to [drop-off location] possible?" At the same time, check whether the vehicle and dates you want are available. Online booking forms may not have a one-way option, so a phone call is the safest approach.
STEP 2: Confirm Booking and Pay the One-Way Fee
Once one-way availability is confirmed, finalise your booking. The one-way fee is added on top of the base rental fee. Payment timing varies by operator, but many collect it at pick-up by cash or card.
STEP 3: Check the Drop-Off Location and Hours in Advance
Confirm the address, opening hours, and parking arrangements of the drop-off location before you travel. Since this will be a place you visit for the first time on the final day of your trip, checking the route on Google Maps in advance is reassuring. Also confirm whether after-hours returns are accepted (key drop-box).
STEP 4: Return Procedure
When you arrive at the drop-off location, hand over the vehicle to a staff member. The main checks at handover are:
- Checking for new scratches or dents (compared to the condition at pick-up)
- Fuel level (full-tank return is standard)
- Cleanliness of the interior
- Return of optional items (child seat, etc.)
With a one-way return, the pick-up and drop-off teams need to share information about the vehicle's condition. Always photograph the damage check sheet at pick-up and bring it with you to drop-off to avoid disputes.
Base Rental Fees vs. One-Way Surcharges
Whether the one-way fee feels "expensive" is easiest to judge by comparing it as a percentage of the base rental cost.
| Rental Period | Estimated Base Fee | One-Way Fee (Asahikawa↔Sapporo) | One-Way Fee as % of Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 nights / 4 days | ¥70,000–¥90,000 | ¥16,500 | approx. 18–24% |
| 5 nights / 6 days | ¥110,000–¥140,000 | ¥16,500 | approx. 12–15% |
| 7 nights / 8 days | ¥140,000–¥180,000 | ¥16,500 | approx. 9–12% |
The longer your stay, the smaller the one-way fee becomes as a proportion of the total. Compared to the equivalent "cost of travelling back from Asahikawa to Shin-Chitose by express train (two tickets ≈ ¥8,000–¥10,000 plus time lost)", one-way drop-off often works out more efficient. For base rental price benchmarks, refer to the rate comparison in our Top 15 Hokkaido Campervan Rentals.
Combining One-Way Returns with Ferry Itineraries
Bringing a Rental from Honshu by Ferry Is Not Practical
Taking a campervan rented from a Honshu (Kanto/Kansai) operator to Hokkaido by ferry, touring, and then dropping it off with a Hokkaido operator is almost never possible. Campervan rental insurance, maintenance, and repositioning systems are all independent per operator, and there is no formal mechanism for "handing over" a vehicle to another company. When planning a trip from Honshu to Hokkaido, rent from a Hokkaido-based operator.
How to Combine Ferry Travel with a One-Way Return
If you want to include a ferry in your itinerary and use a one-way return, here are some realistic patterns:
- Tomakomai ferry IN → rent at Shin-Chitose → Hakodate OUT → Seikan Ferry: If a Shin-Chitose to Hakodate one-way becomes available, you could cross Hokkaido from top to bottom and return to Honshu by Seikan Ferry. However, supporting operators are currently very limited.
- Rent at Shin-Chitose → tour → return campervan at Tomakomai → board the ferry yourself: Rather than a one-way return, you return the campervan before boarding the ferry. This is cheaper than taking the campervan on the ferry.
- Use your own campervan or a purchased vehicle with the ferry: If it's your own vehicle, you have complete freedom. Worth considering if you are not limited to rentals.
When combining a ferry with a campervan trip, the most practical approach is to rent from a Hokkaido-based operator and return the vehicle to a different Hokkaido location. Use the ferry purely as personal transport and keep the campervan entirely within Hokkaido — this is the simplest arrangement.
Estimated Additional Costs for One-Way Returns
| Item | Estimate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One-way surcharge | ¥5,500–¥33,000 | Varies by route and operator |
| Fuel | Based on distance | Full-tank return is standard |
| Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) | ¥1,100–¥2,200/day | Applies regardless of one-way status |
| ETC / toll roads | Depends on route | Most roads between Asahikawa and Wakkanai are toll-free |
The one-way surcharge varies greatly depending on the route distance and the operator's policy. For example, Camping Lines Hokkaido charges ¥16,500 for the Asahikawa↔Sapporo route (approx. 140 km), but longer routes or operators with limited availability may charge ¥30,000 or more. In addition to the one-way fee, standard extras (CDW, optional insurance, child seat, etc.) apply as with any normal rental. See our Full List of Add-On Costs and Options for details.
Alternatives When One-Way Is Not Available
If no one-way plan is available for your desired route, here are ways to redesign your itinerary.
Switch to a Loop Route (Same Start and End Point)
The most reliable option. If you pick up and return in Asahikawa, plan a large loop through northern Hokkaido and back. With 6 or more nights, a full loop is entirely possible given Hokkaido's size. It may seem like a detour, but travelling at your own pace is one of the great pleasures of campervan travel.
Choose Your Flight Based on the Return Location
If you can only return to Shin-Chitose, book your homeward flight from Shin-Chitose. If you think of the extra airfare as a substitute for the one-way fee, it can actually work out cheaper. Budget airlines (LCCs) make it easy to keep costs down on routes from regional airports such as Asahikawa, Hakodate, or Obihiro.
Use Public Transport for the Final Leg
For example, return the campervan in Asahikawa and take the JR limited express "Kamui" or "Lilac" to Shin-Chitose. The journey takes about 1.5–2 hours and costs around ¥4,000–¥5,000 unreserved. Using the train only on the last day may cost less than the ¥16,500 one-way fee.
Rent from an Operator Based at Your Destination
If your itinerary ends in Hakodate, you could rent from a Hakodate-based operator and build your trip around Hakodate. Hokkaido is vast — even the Hakodate area alone offers 2–3 nights of activities. For Hakodate-area operators, see our Hakodate Campervan Rental Comparison.

- Confirm the route: Is one-way possible for your specific pick-up and drop-off combination?
- One-way fee: How much extra will it cost?
- Return time and location: What are the drop-off location's opening hours and handover point?
- Return method: Staff handover or key drop-box?
- Availability: Even if one-way is offered, is the vehicle and date you want still available?
If a one-way return is a cornerstone of your itinerary, always confirm every detail with the operator by phone or email before finalising your booking. Even if the website says "one-way available," your specific route, date, and vehicle type may not be supported. Discovering "sorry, we can't do one-way after all" after the itinerary is locked in will force a major replanning exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Are there operators in Hokkaido that allow campervan drop-off at a different location?
Camping Lines Hokkaido supports one-way returns between Asahikawa BASE and Sapporo BASE (¥16,500 incl. tax; confirmed May 2026). All other operators generally only accept same-location returns.
Q. Can I pick up in Shin-Chitose and return in Hakodate?
No operator has been confirmed to offer this route as of now. Fujicars Japan Chitose does not offer one-way drop-offs either. If no operator offers it, you could either redesign the itinerary as a round trip between Hakodate and Shin-Chitose, or rent from a Hakodate-based operator. See our Hakodate Campervan Rental Comparison for more details.
Q. How much is the one-way fee?
Camping Lines Hokkaido charges ¥16,500 (incl. tax) for the Asahikawa↔Sapporo route. For other routes and operators, the range is roughly ¥5,500–¥33,000, depending on route distance and operator policy.
Q. Can I pick up in Asahikawa and drop off in Obihiro or Kushiro?
These routes are not currently included in confirmed offerings. If you want a one-way drop-off towards Obihiro or eastern Hokkaido, contact operators directly. If not available, redesign the itinerary with an Asahikawa return, or look for operators based in Obihiro or Kushiro.
Q. Can I rent a campervan in Honshu and bring it to Hokkaido by ferry?
Technically possible, but most Honshu rental operators prohibit taking their vehicles to other regions by ferry. If this is prohibited in the contract or terms of use, insurance may not apply. When touring Hokkaido, rent from a Hokkaido-based operator.
Q. Does one-way rental affect the insurance coverage?
Coverage is generally the same. However, roadside assistance at the drop-off location may differ from standard, so confirm this at the time of booking.
