72 Campgrounds & Auto-Camping Sites in Hokkaido | Filter by Power, Campervan Access, Year-Round

When you’re searching for a campground in Hokkaido, the real problem isn’t the sheer number of options — it’s that each site handles campervan access, power, and distance from the airport differently, making them hard to compare. This page brings together 72 campgrounds and auto-campsites across Hokkaido in a single table, so you can filter by power, campervan access, year-round operation, pets, and area, and sort by price range and distance from the nearest airport.

These 72 sites are only ones we confirmed as operating through official municipal, tourism association, or facility websites as of September 2, 2026. Of the 89 sites in the previous version, we removed those we could not confirm through official sources and those we found had closed (details later in this article). Anything not stated on the official site is marked “unconfirmed” rather than filled in with a guess.

This site compares campervan rentals across Hokkaido. Once you know where you’ll be staying, that determines the vehicle length and battery capacity you need, and which airport to rent from. This page connects your choice of campground to your choice of vehicle.

Search the Full List | Filter All 72 Sites by Power, Access, Year-Round Status, Pets, and Area

Use the six dropdowns above the table (area, power, year-round, pets, campervan access, bathing) to stack conditions, and the count of matching sites updates instantly. Tap a column header to sort — “estimated auto-site fee” sorts from cheapest, and “nearest airport (distance)” sorts from closest. Facility names link to the official site, and the notes column carries any issues we found during our check, such as name discrepancies or shortened operating seasons, exactly as found. The “Bathing” column summarizes whether each site has an on-site bath or shower and the distance to the nearest hot spring — tap “Details” to expand fees, hours, and sources. Anything not stated on the official site is marked “Checking” rather than guessed.

On smartphones, each site appears as its own card. The fastest approach is to filter by “area” and “campervan access = allowed” first, then open “Details” for whichever sites catch your eye.

* Prices and open season reflect the check date at time of listing. Please confirm the latest details on each official website.

*Fees and operating periods reflect what each official site showed as of our confirmation date (confirmed 2026-09-02). Please re-check the official site before booking. "Unconfirmed" means we could not find this information on the official site — it does not mean "not allowed."

If You're Traveling by Campervan, Which Columns Should You Check?

Of the 72 sites, campervan access is confirmed "allowed" at 42, "partial" at 5, "not allowed" at 4, and "unconfirmed" (not stated on the official site) at 21 (confirmed 2026-09-02). For a trip where you sleep in the vehicle, this is the first hurdle.

"Allowed" Doesn't Always Mean Your Vehicle Fits the Site

"Allowed" means the official site mentions vehicle access or auto-camping sites, but cabcons over 6m in total length have been turned away at some sites because they don't fit the plot dimensions. Where the notes say vehicles over a certain length aren't accepted, tell the facility your vehicle's length when booking. "Partial" covers sites like Morappu Campground, where vehicles generally aren't allowed in but a separate, extra-charge site lets you park right next to your tent (Kyukamura Shikotsuko official site, confirmed 2026-09-02).

The 4 sites marked "not allowed" — Wakkanai Forest Park Campground, Kutcharo Lakeside Campground, Nukabira Lakeside Campground, and Kushiro City Onbetsu Fureai Campground — require you to park in a lot and walk to the tent site. Wakkanai Forest Park's official page states outright that "vehicles are not permitted" (Wakkanai City official site, confirmed 2026-09-02). If you plan to sleep in your vehicle, it's safest to rule these out.

If you want to compare plot sizes and vehicle-length limits site by site, we've covered that in depth in a separate guide to 12 campgrounds in Hokkaido that allow campervan access (plot size, power, and fees). This page is for narrowing down the full list; that one is for comparing sites that assume you're driving in.

13 Sites Have Power — Without It, How Many Days Can Your Onboard Battery Last?

Power is confirmed available at every site for 13 locations, available at some sites only for 16, "none" for 10, and unstated for 33. Running just a fridge and lights, most vehicles can manage 1–2 nights; adding an electric blanket or an FF heater fan often makes even one night tight for many vehicles. As a safe rule, cap consecutive nights without power at two, and plan a powered site or RV park on the third night. Combine this with our list of RV parks in Hokkaido (45 JRVA-certified sites).

For wastewater drainage (dump stations), our check found only one site with a confirmed facility — the campervan site at Michi-no-Eki Biei "Shirogane Birke" — while the other 71 had nothing stated on their official sites (confirmed 2026-09-02). Don't count on campgrounds for drainage; instead, plan your route around our list of dump stations and water refill spots in Hokkaido.

Only 5 of 72 Sites Operate Year-Round — In Winter, "Open" and "Usable" Are Different Things

Five sites are confirmed year-round: Auto Resort Tomakomai Alten, Mashu-ko Campground, Snow Peak Tokachi Poroshiri Camp Field, Makkari Takibi Campground, and Shiraoi Camp Field ASOBUBA. That said, Makkari and ASOBUBA carry an "unconfirmed" tag because their official pages don't explicitly state winter operation, and Poroshiri's official site states that its unpowered A-sites close from December through March (Snow Peak official site, confirmed 2026-09-02). The remaining 66 sites operate seasonally, mostly from late April to mid-October. Closing dates are fixed, like "open through September 30," so check the "operating period" column for fall trips.

Only 3 Sites Allow Pets Outright, 19 Allow Them Conditionally

Pets are confirmed "allowed" at 3 sites, "conditional" (leash required, designated sites only, etc.) at 19, "not allowed" at 4, and unstated at 46. Nibutani Family Land Auto Campground's official FAQ states "pets are not permitted" (Biratori Town official FAQ, confirmed 2026-09-02) — the previous version incorrectly listed it as pet-friendly. The conditions vary by site, so filter to "conditional" and read the notes, then tell the facility your dog's breed and how many you're bringing when you book. We've covered general considerations for traveling with pets in our guide to campervan trips in Hokkaido with pets.

What Differs by Area | Eastern Hokkaido 27, Central Hokkaido 22, Northern Hokkaido 19, Southern Hokkaido 4

Eastern Hokkaido (27 Sites) — Cheap and Spacious, but Power Is Scarce

Of the 17 sites where we could confirm numeric fees, 12 (including 2 free ones) cost ¥1,000 or less. Campervan access is "allowed" at 11, unstated at as many as 12, and only 3 sites have power. The nearest airport is spread across several: Tokachi-Obihiro and Nakashibetsu Airports each serve 7 sites, Memanbetsu and Kushiro each serve 6, and Okhotsk Monbetsu serves 1 (our rental base here is Obihiro only) — choosing the airport based on your destination shortens your first day's drive. A practical approach is to use cheap free sites while planning a powered auto-site (such as RECAMP Mashu or Kiyosato Auto Campground) every 2–3 nights.

Central Hokkaido (22 Sites) — Start Here If You're Flying into New Chitose

New Chitose Airport is nearest for 16 of the 22 sites, with 4 within 30km: Auto Resort Tomakomai Alten (17.2km), Morappu Campground (25.5km), Maoi Auto Land (26.1km), and Kitahiroshima Kaeru Campground (28.3km). Access is "allowed" at 17 sites, with power "available" at 6 and "partial" at 7 — better-equipped than other areas overall. Fees run higher here: of the 13 sites with numeric fees, 3 are ¥4,000 or more, and the highest is Mitsuishi Kaihin Park Auto Campground at ¥6,280 (one powered plot). Three sites the previous version grouped as "Hidaka" (Hidaka Sarugawa, Nibutani, Mitsuishi) are included in Central Hokkaido here, and Hyakuninhama Auto Campground in Erimo — also in the Hidaka Subprefecture — has likewise been reclassified into Central Hokkaido.

Northern Hokkaido (19 Sites) — Free Primitive Sites and Powered Auto-Sites at Opposite Ends

Asahikawa Airport is nearest for 12 of the 19 sites, with 3 within 10km: Higashikagura Forest Park Auto Campground "Flore" (5.8km), Shirogane Birke (9.4km), and Biei-no-Oka Campground (9.6km). The remaining 7 are toward Soya and Okhotsk: 6, including Hokkaido Prefectural Soya Fureai Park (10.1km from Wakkanai Airport), are nearest to Wakkanai Airport, while Forest Park Bifuka Island is nearest to Okhotsk Monbetsu Airport (our rental base here is Asahikawa only). Fees range widely, from 3 free sites (Wakkanai Forest Park, Mashike-cho Shokan, Usutaibe Senjogan) up to ¥4,000, with power "available" at 4 and "partial" at 5. None operate year-round — all 19 are seasonal.

Southern Hokkaido (4 Sites) — 3 Within 30km of Hakodate Airport

Southern Hokkaido is down to just 4 sites because 8 of the previous version's 13 Southern Hokkaido sites could not be confirmed as existing or operating on official sites and were dropped, and Hyakuninhama Auto Campground in Erimo (Hidaka Subprefecture) has been reclassified into Central Hokkaido. All 4 remaining sites are nearest to Hakodate Airport: Shiraishi Park Hakodate Auto Campground (7.3km, campervan site ¥6,000), Esan Kaihin Park Campground (28.1km, plots from ¥300), Onuma Quasi-National Park Campground (25.2km), and Auto Resort Yakumo (71.0km). Shiraishi Park is the pick for a Hakodate sightseeing base; Esan is the budget option.

How to Find Campgrounds Close to an Airport

Tap the "nearest airport (distance)" column once to sort from closest. For this update, we added five more airports — Wakkanai, Memanbetsu, Nakashibetsu, Kushiro, and Okhotsk Monbetsu — to the nearest-airport calculation for some sites in Eastern and Northern Hokkaido. 56 of the 72 sites now have an airport other than New Chitose as their nearest one (Asahikawa 16, Tokachi-Obihiro 9, Hakodate 4, Wakkanai 6, Memanbetsu 6, Nakashibetsu 7, Okhotsk Monbetsu 2). However, our rental bases are only at four airports — New Chitose, Asahikawa, Obihiro, and Hakodate — so for the 29 sites where Wakkanai, Memanbetsu, Nakashibetsu, Kushiro, or Monbetsu is nearest, you'll actually be picking up from whichever of the four base airports is closest (usually Asahikawa or Obihiro). 29 sites are within 30km of an airport, and 49 are within 50km.

  • Asahikawa Airport: Higashikagura Forest Park Auto Campground "Flore" 5.8km / Michi-no-Eki Biei "Shirogane Birke" Campervan Site 9.4km / Biei-no-Oka Campground 9.6km
  • Tokachi-Obihiro Airport: Nakashibetsu-cho Naumann Park Campground (located in Makubetsu-cho Chuurui) 8.0km / Sarabetsu Country Park 9.5km / Tokachi Ecology Park 21.3km
  • Hakodate Airport: Shiraishi Park Hakodate Auto Campground 7.3km / Onuma Quasi-National Park Campground 25.2km
  • New Chitose Airport: Auto Resort Tomakomai Alten 17.2km / Morappu Campground 25.5km / Maoi Auto Land 26.1km

These distances are straight-line estimates between the facility and the airport, not driving distances. Pickup paperwork takes about an hour on arrival day, so a reliable plan is to stay within 30km on your first night and head to your main destination area from day two. You can see rental bases by airport and area in our list of 15 Hokkaido campervan rental options (by area, price, and use case).

What We Corrected from the Previous Article

On September 2, 2026, we re-checked all 96 sites — the previous version's 89 plus 7 new candidates — against official sources.

  • 72 sites listed: confirmed as operating via official municipal, tourism association, or facility websites. 65 carried over from the previous version, plus 7 new additions this time (Mitsuishi Kaihin Park, Mashike Riverside Park, Shirogane Birke, Takikawa Camp Site, RECAMP Mashu, Kamishihoro Aviation Park, Odaito Fureai)
  • 24 sites not listed: 22 whose existence or current operation could not be confirmed on an official site (including Shikotsuko-hantei Campground and Tenninkyo Campground), plus 2 confirmed closed. Toyako-hantei Campground: the Toya Machizukuri Tourism Association has announced that camping has been prohibited in the lakeside park since fiscal year 2021 (Toya Machizukuri Tourism Association, confirmed 2026-09-02). We also dropped Abuta Park Campground, part of the same lakeside park group.
  • 12 corrections: cases where power, access, pets, fees, names, or location didn't match official sources. For example, Morappu Campground was listed in the previous version as "power available, access allowed," but officially it has no power and access is limited to some sites only. Kiritappu-shitsugen Campground's official name is Kiritappu-misaki Campground, and tent and vehicle overnight stays are free (the previous version listed ¥1,000+). Nakashibetsu-cho Naumann Park Campground is actually located in Makubetsu-cho Chuurui.

There are a lot of "unconfirmed" entries because we chose not to fill gaps with information from third-party booking sites when the official site didn't state it. For "unconfirmed" facilities, reading the notes and making one phone call is usually enough before you go.

Once You've Picked a Campground, How Do You Choose a Vehicle?

Once you know where you want to go, your vehicle requirements follow. If many of your sites are "allowed" but tight on space, look at a vancon around 5m in length; if you'll go several nights without power, prioritize a larger sub-battery capacity; if you're using pet-conditional sites, choose a pet-friendly vehicle. In that order, your options narrow down. Rental bases sit near the New Chitose, Asahikawa, Obihiro, and Hakodate airports, and our site lets you compare rates, vehicle types, and bases side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Can I visit Hokkaido campgrounds without a reservation?

Of the 72 sites, reservations are officially stated as "required" at 36, "not required" at 16, "recommended" at 1, and unstated at 19 (confirmed 2026-09-02). Some powered auto-sites now require advance booking and prepayment only. In July and August, sort by the "reservation" column in the table, then check the official site's booking method.

Q2: How many campgrounds allow campervan access?

Of the 72 sites, official sources confirm access is "allowed" at 42, "partial" at 5, and "not allowed" at 4. Even where access is "allowed," a cabcon over 6m in length may not fit the plot.

Q3: Are any campgrounds open in winter?

5 of the 72 sites are confirmed year-round: 3 in Central Hokkaido (Auto Resort Tomakomai Alten, Makkari Takibi Campground, Shiraoi Camp Field ASOBUBA) and 2 in Eastern Hokkaido (Mashu-ko Campground, Snow Peak Tokachi Poroshiri Camp Field). Some sites shut off cooking areas and water in winter, so even when open, you should assume you'll need gear that's fully self-contained inside the vehicle. If you have concerns about winter driving or heating, it helps to sort those out first with our guide to things to know before a winter campervan trip in Hokkaido.

Q4: Are there any free campgrounds?

5 sites are confirmed free of charge: Wakkanai Forest Park, Mashike-cho Shokan, Usutaibe Senjogan, Kushiro City Onbetsu Fureai, and Kiritappu-shitsugen (officially named Kiritappu-misaki Campground). Note that Wakkanai Forest Park and Onbetsu don't allow vehicle access and are geared toward tent camping. Q5: What do auto-sites typically cost?

Among the 46 sites where we could confirm a numeric lowest fee, the median is ¥1,165; 34 are ¥2,000 or less, and 6 are ¥4,000 or more, with the highest being Mitsuishi Kaihin Park Auto Campground at ¥6,280 (with power). Some facilities charge a separate entry fee, and some add roughly ¥1,000 for power (Shiraishi Park Hakodate is ¥4,000 without power, ¥5,000 with), so treat the table's figures as the lowest-price guide.
