Otaru Area Highlights

Otaru Canal

The iconic stone warehouse district along the canal is the symbol of Otaru. The area is especially beautiful at night when gas lamps light up the canal. The nearest paid parking lots have height restrictions (2.1–2.3m for most). Campervans should use the larger paid lots on the outskirts and walk in.

Sakaimachi Street

A historic shopping street lined with glasswork shops, music box stores, and sweet shops. About 10 minutes on foot from the canal. Parking in the immediate area is limited — use the canal-area parking lots and walk.

Otaru Seafood Market

Shakotan Peninsula (Cape Kamui)

Cape Kamui has a free parking lot (no height restriction) and a 20-minute hiking trail to the cape tip. Sea urchin from Shakotan is in season June–August and available at roadside stalls. The road to the cape is narrow in places — drive carefully with a large campervan.
