Otaru Canal
The iconic stone warehouse district along the canal is the symbol of Otaru. The area is especially beautiful at night when gas lamps light up the canal. The nearest paid parking lots have height restrictions (2.1–2.3m for most). Campervans should use the larger paid lots on the outskirts and walk in.
Sakaimachi Street
A historic shopping street lined with glasswork shops, music box stores, and sweet shops. About 10 minutes on foot from the canal. Parking in the immediate area is limited — use the canal-area parking lots and walk.
Otaru Seafood Market
Open early morning. Great for fresh crab, sea urchin, and salmon roe to cook in your campervan. Several seafood restaurants also serve eat-in options. Parking nearby has a 2.0–2.2m height limit — use the outer lots.
Yoichi Nikka Whisky Distillery
About 30 minutes west of Otaru by car. Founded by Masataka Taketsuru, this is one of Japan’s most famous whisky distilleries. Free tours available (no reservation needed, check current hours). The parking lot accommodates large vehicles including RVs — no height restriction. A recommended stop for whisky fans.
Shakotan Peninsula (Cape Kamui)
About 1 hour from Otaru, Shakotan is famous for its crystal-clear cobalt-blue sea — one of Hokkaido’s most scenic coastlines. Cape Kamui has a free parking lot (no height restriction) and a 20-minute hiking trail to the cape tip. Sea urchin from Shakotan is in season June–August and available at roadside stalls. The road to the cape is narrow in places — drive carefully with a large campervan.
