Book by December 31: How Early-Bird and Long-Stay Discounts Work for a Winter Campervan in Hokkaido

Most travelers from English-speaking countries book their Hokkaido winter campervan trip about 136 days ahead — roughly four and a half months before departure. If your trip starts in March 2027, that puts your booking deadline right around December 31, 2026.

December 31 isn’t a marketing deadline — it’s just where the math lands for two common March start dates. Book a trip starting March 1, 2027, and December 31 is the last day to lock in the 20% early-bird rate. Book a trip starting March 31, 2027, and December 31 is the last day for the 30% rate instead. Same calendar date, two different discounts, depending on when your trip starts.

How the early-bird discount actually works

A calendar with marked dates highlights a booking confirmed 90 days in advance next to a camper van in a snowy landscape, illustrating the early-bird discount process.

The early-bird discount is tied to how far in advance you book relative to your rental start date, not to a fixed calendar promotion. There are two confirmed tiers:

  • Book 90 days or more before your rental start date: 30% off
  • Book 60 days or more before your rental start date: 20% off

Both tiers work backward from your rental start date. If you’re inside the 90-day window but still outside the 60-day window, you get the 20% rate. Miss the 60-day window and the early-bird discount is no longer available for that booking.

A separate long-stay discount also exists for rentals of two nights or more, in a range of 15% to 40% off, but the site does not publish which stay length maps to which percentage within that range — so we can’t give you a step-by-step breakdown here. One tier we can confirm: rentals of 30 days or more are 50% off (interview with Moving Inn, October 6, 2026). What we can confirm is that the early-bird and long-stay discounts cannot be combined: only one applies, whichever is more favorable for your booking.

Your December 31 deadline, worked out by departure date

Here’s the same 90-day and 60-day math applied to a range of early-2027 start dates, so you can find your own deadline without doing the subtraction yourself.

If your own start date falls between the rows above, count 90 and 60 days back from your date the same way. If you’re traveling in December 2026 or early January 2027, your deadlines have likely already passed the 90-day mark, or are passing it very soon — so it’s worth checking your dates now rather than later.

Why English-speaking travelers tend to book this far ahead

A group of diverse English-speaking travelers excitedly plan a Hokkaido camper van trip, surrounded by travel guides and a laptop displaying a booking screen.

Looking at actual booking records, the median lead time for English-speaking customers booking a Hokkaido winter campervan is 136 days — meaning half book even further ahead than that. It’s also common for these bookings to use an early-bird discount: in a review of bookings from English-speaking travelers, roughly 90% included some form of early-bird rate.

In a small recent sample of bookings, the English-speaking travelers in that batch — from Australia, New Zealand, and the United States — all happened to book with the 90-day, 30% rate. That’s a small sample, not a guarantee that every English-speaking booking gets the top tier, but it lines up with the broader pattern: travelers booking from further away tend to plan early, and planning early is what puts them inside the 90-day window in the first place.

How this compares to other Hokkaido campervan rental companies

A comparison chart in the background shows various discount tiers of different companies, with a camper van parked beside it, illustrating different rental company offers.

Not every Hokkaido campervan company structures discounts the same way. Camping Lines Hokkaido (CLH), for example, publishes a three-tier long-stay discount on its pricing page (7–13 nights: 10% off, 14–20 nights: 20% off, 21+ nights: 30% off), plus a separate 10% repeat-customer discount for returning within a year — but no early-bird discount tied to booking lead time. If you’re comparing options, it’s worth checking whether a company rewards booking early or only rewards staying longer, since that changes when you actually need to commit.

What happens if your plans change: cancellation basics

Before you lock in a December 31 booking, it helps to know what a cancellation would cost if your plans change. The confirmed cancellation schedule is:

  • From 7 days before your rental start date: 30% cancellation fee
  • From 5 days before: 50%
  • From 2 days before: 100%

The official terms don’t state a fee for cancellations made earlier than 7 days before your start date, so we’re not going to guess at what that means here — if this matters for your booking, it’s worth confirming directly before you pay. Bookings of one month or more work differently: you pay in full when you book, a 30% cancellation fee applies from one month before your start date, and the standard schedule above applies after that (interview with Moving Inn, October 6, 2026).

Common questions

A traveler looks at a calendar and calculator while sitting next to a camper van, calculating days to determine eligibility for early-bird discount rates.

How do I know if my booking qualifies for the 90-day or 60-day rate?

Count the days between the date you complete your booking and your rental start date. If it’s 90 days or more, you qualify for the 30% rate. If it’s under 90 but still 60 days or more, you qualify for the 20% rate. This is exactly the kind of date-based question we see from travelers checking specific stays — for example, whether a January stay still qualifies for the 90-day rate, or whether booking now still falls inside a 60-day window before a trip a couple of months out.

Can I combine the early-bird discount with the long-stay discount?

No. The two discounts cannot be stacked. Whichever discount is more favorable for your specific booking is the one that applies.

What’s the long-stay discount for a rental of two nights or more?

It ranges from 15% to 40% off depending on how many nights you book, but the exact percentage for each stay length isn’t published, so we can’t map a specific stay length to a specific percentage. If you’re planning a longer trip — for example, an extended winter stay of a couple of months — rentals of 30 days or more are 50% off, and bookings of a month or more are paid in full at booking (interview with Moving Inn, October 6, 2026).

What if I need to cancel with more than 7 days’ notice?

The confirmed cancellation fees start at 7 days before your rental start date (30%, rising to 50% at 5 days and 100% at 2 days). We don’t have a confirmed fee for cancellations made earlier than that — the official terms don’t list one — so if this is important to your decision, please confirm directly before booking rather than assuming it’s free. The one exception we have confirmed is bookings of one month or more, where a 30% fee applies from one month before the start date (interview with Moving Inn, October 6, 2026).

Planning a winter trip also means thinking beyond the discount: how to stay warm overnight in a winter campervan, what your insurance deductible (NOC) actually covers, and where you’re allowed to park overnight in winter.
