10 Best Places for Wildlife Watching in Hokkaido: Steller’s Sea Eagles, Red-Crowned Cranes, Blakiston’s Fish Owls, Northern Pikas, Seasons, Regions, and How to Get There and Stay by Campervan
When people think of drift ice, they think of Shiretoko, but it is far from the only place. Hokkaido has quite a few spots where you have a good chance of meeting wild animals, and this article lists only those where watching is offered as a cruise, guided tour, or observation hut, organized by region and season. Steller’s sea eagles, red-crowned cranes, Blakiston’s fish owls, northern pikas: you may know the names, but where, when, and for how much you can see them is surprisingly little known.
The best viewing is often before dawn or at night, and traveling from a hotel to the site at those hours can mean missing the peak. A campervan has one advantage: you can sleep on site and wait. Note, however, that Michi-no-Eki roadside stations are, as a rule, for short rest naps only, and overnight stays are not officially permitted. Please read the stations introduced here with that in mind. Mashu Onsen is a place where visitors have been asked to refrain from staying overnight, so it is excluded from the vehicle-sleeping candidates.

Rausu Cruises | Winter Steller’s Sea Eagles, Summer Orcas and Sperm Whales

As the table shows, Rausu is one of the few places where Steller’s sea eagles and white-tailed eagles can be seen in numbers. From late January to mid-March, about 700 of them are said to gather off Rausu. Because you watch from a boat, the departure time you choose shapes the experience. On the Shiretoko Peninsula in winter, drift-ice boats sail only from the Rausu side, not from Utoro.
There are three winter departures. The early-morning departure and the departure around 8:30, both aimed at photography, cost 12,000 yen, or 9,000 yen if you do not bring an SLR camera. Both take 2 to 2.5 hours. The departure around 1 p.m. is shorter at about 1 hour and costs 5,000 yen. Elementary school children pay 4,500 yen in every case (2,500 yen for the 1 p.m. departure), and preschoolers are free. The meeting time for the early-morning departure is decided the day before, so you need to be reachable the night before departure (confirmed with the official source on 2026-09-16).
Summer Rausu is a completely different sea. From late April to mid-October, cruises looking for sperm whales, orcas, and dolphins run twice a day at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Adults pay 9,000 yen, elementary school children 4,500 yen, and preschoolers are free. Each takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and groups of 10 or more get a 10% discount. In 2026 the operating period ran from April 25 to October 12. Orcas are likely from late April to July and sperm whales from July to October, so the month to visit depends on what you want to see.
There are two things to watch out for if you are driving. One is clothing: unlike the Utoro side, Rausu often stays below 20°C even in midsummer, and it is colder still on the water. Even on a summer trip, pack a jacket. The other is the road: the Shiretoko Pass road connecting Utoro and Rausu opens only during restricted hours until the end of May. If you plan to stay on the Utoro side and catch the 9 a.m. boat, check that year’s opening hours first or you may not make it.
If you want to park and sleep in Rausu, Michi-no-Eki Shiretoko-Rausu is a candidate. It is close to the port, which makes it easy to get to the early-morning departure’s meeting point. If you arrive on the Rausu side the night before, your itinerary will not be tied to the opening hours of the pass road.
Northern Pikas at Lake Shikaribetsu | Where to See Them, Parking, and Guided Walks

The northern pika is a small animal that lives in gaps between rocks, and you often notice its call before you see it. At Lake Shikaribetsu there is a chance to observe them from May to October, with the nature center as the starting point. If you join a guided walk, the guide will tell you where on the rock slope to listen.
For readers visiting by campervan, here is parking information. There is parking space around the nature center, and from there you walk to the spots on the rock slope. You will find them more easily on a guided walk than on your own. The nature center also offers sea kayaking, with a price of 10,000 yen.
If you want to park and sleep in this area, the RV park at Tokachi Wakka no Mori is open year-round. It also fits well with a winter itinerary aimed at Siberian flying squirrels.
Red-Crowned Cranes in Tsurui | Feeding Grounds and Morning Mist at Otowa Bridge

From mid-December to early March, up to 200 red-crowned cranes gather at the feeding grounds in Tsurui Village. According to the village’s official information, feeding takes place twice a day at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and viewing is free (confirmed 2026-09-14). You do not need a special reservation; just show up at the right time and you can see them.
The other classic spot is Otowa Bridge. It is known for the sight of cranes emerging from the mist rising off the river on a cold morning. Unlike the feeding grounds, it needs the right combination of timing and weather, and if you want to photograph it you will wait at the foot of the bridge from early morning. Guided observation tours are also offered, with prices said to start at 14,500 yen. Feeding begins in mid-November, and pairs can be seen during the breeding season.
In Kushiro Marsh there is also an early-morning canoe from Toro. Prices are said to start at 7,000 yen, and it is a summer way to enjoy the marsh’s wildlife from the water. If you want to park and sleep around Tsurui and Kushiro, the RV park attached to Michi-no-Eki Akan Tancho no Sato in Akan, Kushiro City, is a candidate.
Blakiston’s Fish Owl | Year-Round Encounters at Washi no Yado in Rausu

The Blakiston’s fish owl is a large owl with a limited population even within Japan, and “Washi no Yado” in Rausu is known as a place to observe it. That you can see it year-round is valuable, since it lets you plan a trip in any season. For prices and how to book, it is safest to ask the inn directly by phone (0153-87-2877); we could not obtain the price from the official website. Many readers will likely combine it with the Steller’s sea eagle cruise and spend several days based in Rausu.
Wildlife Watching in Shiretoko Utoro (Night Safari)
In Utoro, a night safari operates from April to November. You go into the night forest looking for deer, foxes, and, depending on the time of year, eagles. For the Pickio Shiretoko tour, we confirmed officially that the 2-hour winter course starts at 4,000 yen (2026-09-14). In winter, the program changes to a snowshoe outing following the traces of deer, foxes, and eagles.
If you want to park and sleep in Utoro, Michi-no-Eki Utoro Shirietoku is the base. It is also well placed for getting to the night safari meeting point.
Siberian Flying Squirrels in Tokachi | Pre-Dawn Guided Tours
Watching Siberian flying squirrels centers on catching the moment one pokes its face out of its nest hole, so you wait with a guide in the dark before dawn. In the Tokachi area, several companies offer guided tours, and many require you to inquire about prices. MUSHING WORKS dog sledding is also known as a winter pleasure in the same Tokachi area. Flying squirrels are said to be easier to observe the colder it gets, and some people plan a one-night winter loop through Tokachi that combines them with the northern pikas of Lake Shikaribetsu.
Tufted Puffins and Sea Otters at Ochiishi

From Ochiishi on the Nemuro Peninsula, cruises run to observe tufted puffins and sea otters from the sea. Tufted puffins enter their egg-laying period from May to June, and you can also look for them on cruises in summer, from June to August. The price is said to be 8,000 yen, with departures for groups of 3 or more. Sea otters are also a target of the winter cruises toward Notsuke.
Notsuke Peninsula | Eagles and Whooper Swans, Winter Cruises

The Notsuke Peninsula is known for its distinctive terrain, a long sand spit jutting out into the sea. From January to March in winter, cruises go out to see eagles, whooper swans, sea otters, and seabirds. Migratory birds are said to exceed 250 species, and what you can observe changes through the seasons. Much of the information about the peninsula as a whole comes from secondary sources, so check the latest operating status before you go.
If you want to park and sleep around Nemuro and Notsuke, Michi-no-Eki Swan 44 Nemuro or Michi-no-Eki Odaito are candidates. Odaito also has the Hoshi Odoru RV Park, but we have not been able to confirm whether it operates in winter.
Rhinoceros Auklets on Teuri Island | About 800,000 Birds Returning Together

On Teuri Island, from late May to early July, you can watch about 800,000 rhinoceros auklets return to their burrows all at once around 7 to 8 p.m. The night guide costs 2,500 yen. Details on the ferry to Teuri Island and sleeping in your vehicle are collected in our existing article “Campervan Trip to Teuri and Yagishiri Islands“, so please refer to it if you are considering the crossing.
Watching Happens at Night and in the Morning | 3 Things for Waiting in Your Vehicle (Heating, Power, Toilet)
As we have seen, at many sites the best viewing is concentrated before sunrise or at night. The Steller’s sea eagle sunrise departure, the Siberian flying squirrel before dawn, the rhinoceros auklets around 7 p.m. It is better to wait on site than to travel from a hotel at those hours. But to wait a long time in a vehicle, you need three things: heating, power, and a toilet. The RV parks we officially confirmed to be open year-round in winter are three: Akan Tancho no Sato, Tokachi Wakka no Mori, and Shiretoko Kiyosato Uenewsaru Midori (of these, Uenewsaru Midori has its water supply shut off in winter). Their facilities and how to spend the night in a vehicle are covered in detail in the related articles below.
