Northern Hokkaido Has Only 2 RV Parks, in Nayoro and Wassamu | Just 1 Usable in Winter, Plus 11 Michi-no-Eki and 11 Campgrounds Checked [2026 Edition]
Search “northern Hokkaido RV park” and you mostly get articles listing all of Hokkaido, making it hard to tell how many actually exist around Nayoro or Rumoi. Here’s the number up front. Cross-checking the 46 Hokkaido facilities on the official “Kuruma Tabi” site (which lists Japan RV Association (JRVA)-certified facilities) against each municipality, northern Hokkaido excluding Wakkanai — that is, northern Kamikawa, Rumoi, and southern Soya — has just 2 certified RV parks (confirmed 2026-09-07): Nayoro and Wassamu. And since Nayoro closes for winter from November through March, only 1 certified RV park in northern Hokkaido is usable in winter: Wassamu. This article organizes rates, power, and booking methods for those 2 facilities with confirmation dates, and lines up what’s “officially stated” at 11 Michi-no-Eki and 11 campgrounds as well.
What’s checked here comes from the official Kuruma Tabi site (JRVA certification list), each facility’s own official site, each municipality’s official site, and the Michi-no-Eki Hokkaido portal. Rates, operating seasons, and booking deadlines change, so always check each facility’s latest official information before you leave.

How many certified RV parks are there in northern Hokkaido (excluding Wakkanai)?
Two: "RV Park Nayoro Onsen Sun Pillar" in Nayoro City, and "RV Park Wassamu Fureai no Mori" in Wassamu Town. There is no certified facility listed among the official Kuruma Tabi 46-facility Hokkaido list for Shibetsu, Kenbuchi, Bifuka, Otoineppu, Nakagawa, Horonobe, Teshio, Toyotomi, Rumoi, Obira, Mashike, Shosanbetsu, Enbetsu, Haboro, or Tomamae (confirmed 2026-09-07). Wakkanai and the Cape Soya area also have zero certified facilities, which we've covered separately in Wakkanai's RV Park Situation.
Facilities calling themselves an "RV park" that don't appear on the certification list aren't counted in this article. What an RV park actually is, and how it differs from a Michi-no-Eki, is covered in What Is an RV Park? Rates, Facilities, and How It Differs from a Michi-no-Eki, and every certified facility across Hokkaido is in Hokkaido RV Parks: The Complete List.
Comparing the 2 facilities in Nayoro and Wassamu
| Facility | Location | Rate (per night, per vehicle) | Power | Open period | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RV Park Nayoro Onsen Sun Pillar | Nisshin, Nayoro City | ¥2,500 (power included) | Yes, free | Spring–fall. Closed in winter (planned Nov 1–Mar 31) | Phone only. Same-day up to 20:00 if a slot is open |
| RV Park Wassamu Fureai no Mori | 103 Mikasa, Wassamu Town, Kamikawa District | ¥2,500 with power + gazebo / ¥2,000 with power / ¥1,000 without power | Yes, free (3 spaces) | Year-round | Phone only (016-532-4470). By 17:00 the day before, same-day if a slot is open |
Both confirmed 2026-09-07 on the facility pages of the official Kuruma Tabi site.
RV Park Nayoro Onsen Sun Pillar (Nayoro City)
This RV park is attached to Nayoro Onsen Sun Pillar, east of central Nayoro. The rate is ¥2,500 per night per vehicle, including power. Booking is phone-only, and same-day vacancy bookings are accepted up to 20:00 (confirmed 2026-09-07). Cancellation fees are set at 50% 3 days before, and 100% from 2 days before through the day itself, so if your trip is the kind where weather can shift your schedule, time your booking carefully. The key thing to watch is the operating season: the official Kuruma Tabi listing shows "closed for winter (planned Nov 1–Mar 31)," so it's unusable during the snowy season. Details are on the Nayoro Onsen Sun Pillar official site.
RV Park Wassamu Fureai no Mori (Wassamu Town)
Located in Wassamu Town, north of Asahikawa along National Route 40. Rates come in 3 tiers: ¥1,000 without power, ¥2,000 with power, and ¥2,500 for power plus a gazebo. Power is free, for 3 spaces. It's open year-round, and booking is phone-only (016-532-4470). Bookings are basically due by 17:00 the day before, though same-day booking is possible if a slot is open (confirmed 2026-09-07). This is the only certified RV park usable in winter across northern Hokkaido, so if you're touring the Nayoro/Shibetsu area from November through March, it's more reliable to lock this facility in first before building the rest of your itinerary. How to plan a winter drive through northern Hokkaido is covered in Winter Campervan Trip: Shibetsu & Nayoro. The official site is Wassamu Town Athletic Association (Wassamu Fureai no Mori).
Can you stay at a Michi-no-Eki in towns without an RV park? Official statements at 11 stations
With only 2 certified RV parks, how you think about Michi-no-Eki parking lots becomes a practical question on a north-south trip through northern Hokkaido. We checked whether each municipality's or each Michi-no-Eki's official site states anything about overnight parking, at 11 main Michi-no-Eki from Nayoro through Rumoi, Teshio, and Toyotomi. All 11 come back "not stated" (confirmed 2026-09-07) — meaning none says it's okay, and none says it isn't.
| Michi-no-Eki | Location | Official statement on overnight parking | Facilities confirmed officially |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nayoro | Nayoro City | Not stated | — |
| Bifuka | Bifuka Town | Not stated | Facility info only (Bifuka Town official) |
| Hitsuji no Machi Samurai/Shibetsu | Shibetsu City | Not stated | 64 parking spaces (Shibetsu City official) |
| Otoineppu | Otoineppu Village | Not stated | 50 parking spaces, 24-hour restroom (Michi-no-Eki Hokkaido portal) |
| Nakagawa | Nakagawa Town | Not stated | — |
| Teshio | Teshio Town | Not stated | — |
| Horonobe | Horonobe Town | Not stated | — |
| Toyotomi | Toyotomi Town | Not stated | — |
| Rumoi | Rumoi City | Not stated | — |
| Obira Nishin Banya | Obira Town | Not stated | 67 parking spaces, 24-hour restroom (Obira Town official) |
| ☆ Roman Kaido Shosanbetsu | Shosanbetsu Village | Not stated | The adjacent village-run Misakidai Park Auto Campground is officially stated as free and requiring no reservation |
Personal blogs mention things like "Teshio lets you overnight-park" or "we stayed at Toyotomi Onsen's public lot," but since neither Teshio Town nor Toyotomi Town confirms this officially, this article doesn't treat it as fact. A Michi-no-Eki is, by design, a facility for rest stops while driving, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's position is that "a nap is fine, but use for lodging purposes is generally not." Whether to spend the night at a station with no statement either way is something you'll need to weigh yourself against that principle. Michi-no-Eki across Hokkaido where overnight parking policy could be officially confirmed are covered, by how-to-tell criteria, in Which Hokkaido Roadside Stations Allow Van-Sleeping? Top 20 Picks.
There's exactly one official statement worth flagging: Shosanbetsu. Not the Michi-no-Eki itself, but the adjacent village-run "Misakidai Park Auto Campground," which Shosanbetsu Village's official site states is free and requires no reservation (confirmed 2026-09-07). On a route heading north along the Sea of Japan coast from Rumoi to Teshio, this is the only spot confirmed by official information as a place you're welcome to stay. Its season is limited, though — in 2026 it runs June 6 through September 23 (weekends and holidays only in June and September, daily in July and August).
There are 11 campgrounds, but every one of them closes in winter
Northern Hokkaido has plenty of auto campgrounds as options, but every one of them operates seasonally when you check the dates. Of the 11 we checked, zero operate year-round (confirmed 2026-09-07). In other words, if you look for a "place to stay in winter" in northern Hokkaido using only official information, it narrows down to the single certified RV park at Wassamu Fureai no Mori.
| Campground | Municipality | Open period | Reservation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iwaonai Lake Shirakaba Campground | Shibetsu City | April 25–October 12, 2026 (planned) | Not required |
| Ehon no Sato Kenbuchi Campground | Kenbuchi Town | Check on inquiry | Required |
| Forest Park Bifuka Island | Bifuka Town | Check on inquiry | Check on inquiry |
| Horokanai Campground | Horokanai Town | June–September | Not required |
| Kabutonuma Park Campground | Toyotomi Town | May 1–September 30 | Required |
| Sarobetsu Marsh Campground | Toyotomi Town | June–September | Not required |
| Shosanbetsu Misakidai Park Campground | Shosanbetsu Village | June 6–September 23, 2026 | Required |
| Mashike Riverside Park Auto Campground | Mashike Town | Mid-April–mid-October | Check on inquiry |
| Mashike Town Shokan Campground | Mashike Town | Check on inquiry | Not required |
| Lake Kuccharo Lakeside Campground | Hamatonbetsu Town | Mid-April–around October | Check on inquiry |
| Usutaibe Senjoiwa Campground | Esashi Town | June 1–August 31 (varies with snow conditions) | Not required |
Any entry marked "check on inquiry" is one where we couldn't confirm the dates or booking method on the official site. We haven't filled these in by guesswork, so call the relevant town before you go. How to make the most of campgrounds around Bifuka Island and Nayoro Sun Pillar Park along the Teshio River is covered in Northern Hokkaido, Bifuka & Nayoro Campervan Trip Guide; the Sarobetsu side is covered in Touring the Sarobetsu Wilderness by Campervan. Having a campsite and being able to spend the night in your vehicle are separate things, so ask at booking time whether you can actually drive your vehicle in.
How does this fit into an itinerary renting from Asahikawa?
Asahikawa is the gateway to northern Hokkaido. Wassamu Fureai no Mori is about 52km from Asahikawa Airport, and Nayoro Onsen Sun Pillar is about 80km (both rough estimates from coordinates, not actual road distance). If you pick up your vehicle at Asahikawa Airport and head north on National Route 40, placing your first night in Wassamu or Nayoro, then continuing the next day through Otoineppu and Nakagawa to Teshio and Toyotomi, or cutting west from Shibetsu toward Rumoi, lines up well with where the certified RV parks are. Companies that rent out of Asahikawa are covered in Asahikawa Campervan Rental Comparison, and the pickup process at the airport is covered in How to Rent a Campervan at Asahikawa Airport.
From April through October, you can secure a place to stay every night within the bounds of official information by combining the 2 RV parks with the 11 campgrounds. From November through March, only Wassamu is confirmed officially as a place to stay, so plan a north-south trip through northern Hokkaido either as an out-and-back itinerary — "1 night in Wassamu, then back to central Asahikawa or Wakkanai" — or on the assumption you'll also use lodging facilities. If you're extending as far as Wakkanai, where to stay is covered in Wakkanai's RV Park Situation, and sightseeing that extends to Cape Soya and Rishiri/Rebun is covered in Wakkanai & Cape Soya Campervan Driving Guide.

See details at Moving Inn →Summary: 2 certified RV parks in northern Hokkaido, 1 in winter
Northern Hokkaido, excluding Wakkanai, has 2 certified RV parks: Nayoro (Nayoro Onsen Sun Pillar, ¥2,500, closed Nov–Mar) and Wassamu (Wassamu Fureai no Mori, ¥1,000–2,500, year-round). None of the 11 Michi-no-Eki has an official statement about overnight parking, and all 11 campgrounds operate seasonally. If you're building a plan around only places you're guaranteed to be able to stay, based on official information alone, the answer is "2 RV parks + campgrounds" in summer and "just Wassamu" in winter (confirmed 2026-09-07). Both facilities are phone-booking only, so call early once your itinerary is set.

Is there a certified RV park usable in northern Hokkaido in winter?

Is there an RV park in Rumoi or Teshio?
The official Kuruma Tabi site's 46-facility Hokkaido list doesn't include a certified RV park for Rumoi City, Obira Town, Mashike Town, Shosanbetsu Village, Enbetsu Town, Teshio Town, Horonobe Town, or Toyotomi Town (confirmed 2026-09-07). The only officially confirmed place to stay along the Sea of Japan coast is Shosanbetsu Village's Misakidai Park Auto Campground (seasonal, free, no reservation required).

None of the 11 stations we checked has an official statement about overnight parking on the municipality's or the Michi-no-Eki's own site (confirmed 2026-09-07). Both facilities accept same-day bookings if a slot is open, but you still need to call. Nayoro Onsen Sun Pillar accepts same-day bookings up to 20:00; Wassamu Fureai no Mori's basic cutoff is 17:00 the day before, with same-day availability depending on vacancy (confirmed 2026-09-07).
