That said, a Michi-no-Eki is strictly a rest facility. Some towns ask visitors to refrain from using their station for overnight stays (example: Mashu Onsen). The 20 places in this article were chosen for their rest facilities and nearby sights, and they are not officially approved for overnight stays. The results of checking the official websites of 94 Michi-no-Eki in Hokkaido are summarized in Hokkaido Michi-no-Eki Overnight Parking Ban List, and etiquette for staying overnight is covered in 8 Etiquette Rules for Overnight Parking at a Michi-no-Eki. Parking counts are approximate. Because stations get crowded during the Obon holiday and long weekends, aim to arrive before 18:00. Biei Shirogane Birke has paid power-supply sites and is the only Michi-no-Eki where a power hookup can be used (check in advance).
In the Features column, “24-hour toilets” is written only for stations checked on the official website of each Michi-no-Eki or on the Hokkaido Michi-no-Eki Liaison Council website in August–September 2026. The individual check dates are given in the text for spots with changes or points to note, such as Akaigawa, Hana Road Eniwa and Biei Shirogane Birke. Stay rules can change, so if you are considering parking for a long time, check the latest information on site or by phone.
Criteria for Judging Whether You Can or Cannot Park Overnight at a Michi-no-Eki

Checking the official websites of 94 of Hokkaido's 128 stations (39 in central and southern Hokkaido, 22 in Tokachi, Kushiro and Nemuro, and 33 in northern Hokkaido and Okhotsk) shows that 0 stations explicitly prohibited overnight parking in the parking lot (Michi-no-Eki Asahikawa has wording that prohibits napping and overnight stays in the corridors and toilets inside the building, but it does not name the parking lot itself). 0 stations explicitly gave permission with wording such as “welcome” or “napping OK” either (checked August 2026).
Legally, a Michi-no-Eki is not an accommodation facility but a rest facility. The general view is that resting and napping are expected, while staying multiple nights for lodging, pitching a tent and running a generator are not. Note that this is not a rule set individually by each Michi-no-Eki, but a guideline read from the station's position as a facility of the road administrator.
In this article, the description of each Michi-no-Eki gives the 24-hour toilets confirmed on its official website, together with the date checked. If you want a longer stay, or want to rest properly with a power supply, choose a paid site that operates on the premise of overnight use rather than the Michi-no-Eki itself. Of the 20 stations covered in this article, Hana Road Eniwa (Eniwa City) has an RV park on site, where you can stay in spaces meant for overnight use rather than in the Michi-no-Eki parking lot (the official site confirms the on-site RV park; checked 2026-09-02). For the usage fee and power conditions, ask the facility when you book. Biei Shirogane Birke (Biei Town) also has paid campervan-only sites (equipped with power, water, showers and laundry), but they are set up only from spring to autumn, and for the fee you should contact the facility to confirm.
3 Things to Know Before Overnight Parking in Hokkaido

① A Michi-no-Eki Is Strictly a “Rest Facility”

Legally, a Michi-no-Eki is not an accommodation facility but a rest facility. Short naps are tolerated, but pitching tents, running generators and staying multiple nights are prohibited. Following the etiquette directly protects the culture of overnight vehicle travel. If you are thinking about choosing a vehicle first, Vehicles Suited to Overnight Parking is also a useful reference.
② Hokkaido's Best Season and Points to Note

| Period | Conditions | Points to note |
|---|---|---|
| June–August | The best season. Day-night temperature difference of 10°C or more | Arriving early is a must at popular spots |
| September–October | Autumn foliage season. Cool and comfortable | Nights can fall below 5°C |
| November–April | Snow and icy roads | Toilets close at some Michi-no-Eki. FF heater is essential |
Even in summer, Hokkaido nights are cold. Since you do not need the air conditioner, you have more room in the sub-battery, but blankets and sleeping bags are a must.
③ Etiquette for Using Michi-no-Eki with a Campervan

The basic rules are these four points: “be quiet, take your trash home, stay only one night, park in the large-vehicle spaces”. For details, see the Michi-no-Eki etiquette article. If you want to “stay properly” or “use electric power”, you should also read about the Michi-no-Eki introduced in the second half of this article that have an on-site RV park, as well as What Is an RV Park? How It Differs from a Michi-no-Eki. For etiquette and facility checks together, Michi-no-Eki Overnight Parking: Etiquette and Facility Check Summary is also helpful.

Can You Park Overnight at a Michi-no-Eki in Winter (December–March) Too? You Cannot Stay the Way You Do in Summer

Within the range checked, there was not a single Michi-no-Eki whose official website explicitly prohibits overnight parking (Hokkaido Michi-no-Eki Overnight Parking Ban List). That said, winter nights in Hokkaido drop below freezing, and some roads close because of snow. Do not head to the 20 places in this article in winter with the same mindset as in summer.
If you are staying in winter, the safest choice is among the 13 RV parks and Michi-no-Eki for winter overnight parking, each checked one by one on its official website to confirm winter use. Before you leave, also look at the following three points.
- Whether the road to your destination closes in winter: Hokkaido Roads That Become Impassable in Winter
- Whether you can sleep warmly in the vehicle (heating, bedding, power): Winter Campervan Overnight Stays: How to Sleep Warm
- If you are worried about driving on snowy or icy roads: Before You Travel Hokkaido by Campervan in Winter
Helpful Packing List and Preparation Checklist for Hokkaido Overnight Parking

To keep the trip comfortable and safe while on the move, please check the following before you leave.
- Sleeping gear: Sleeping bag (rated for 10°C even in summer), pillow, eye mask, earplugs
- Power: External power cord (10 m or longer), portable power station
- Hygiene: Hot spring map, shower towel, toothbrush set
- Vehicle: Tire pressure, engine oil, studless tires (from October)
- Food: Cooler box, water tank (20 L or more), and ingredients that can be cooked in a microwave since BBQ is prohibited

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Can I sleep overnight for free at Michi-no-Eki in Hokkaido?
Using the parking lot itself is free. However, it is positioned as a “nap”, not “lodging”. If you need power, use a Michi-no-Eki with paid power sites such as Shirogane Birke, or an RV park.
Q2: What is the best season for overnight parking in Hokkaido?
June to September is the best season. Temperatures, the opening of sightseeing spots and road conditions are all at their best. Around Obon in August every Michi-no-Eki gets crowded, so we recommend arriving on a weekday early in the week.
Q3: Can I park overnight at a Michi-no-Eki without a campervan?
You can park overnight in an ordinary passenger car too. However, a campervan has an overwhelming advantage in sleeping comfort and luggage storage space. Given the vastness of Hokkaido, renting a campervan is an option that tends to be satisfying for the cost.
Q4: Can I replenish food and water at a Michi-no-Eki?
You can buy food at farm produce markets and shops. However, refilling a water tank at a Michi-no-Eki toilet is bad manners. Refill at an RV park or a gas station.
Q5: How long does it take to visit all 20 places?
A minimum of 10–14 nights is needed. Going around Hokkaido once alone is about 2,000 km. Rather than greedily increasing the daily distance, we recommend relaxing for 3–4 nights in each area.
Q6: Can I park overnight at a Michi-no-Eki in winter (December–March) too?
The number of Michi-no-Eki whose official websites explicitly prohibit overnight parking was 0 within the range checked. However, winter nights fall below freezing, and some roads close because of snow. Please choose from the facilities confirmed on official sources to be usable in winter, as listed in the article on the 13 facilities.
