Which Hokkaido Roadside Stations Allow Van-Sleeping? Top 20 Picks and How to Check the Official Rules [2026]

Hokkaido has about 120 roadside stations (Michi no Eki). Most have 24-hour toilets, large parking areas, and local food — making them among the best overnight van-sleeping bases in Japan.

How to Tell Whether Van-Sleeping Is Allowed at a Roadside Station

It’s often assumed that van-sleeping is fine at any roadside station (Michi no Eki), but very few state this officially. Checking the official websites of 96 of Hokkaido’s 128 roadside stations (39 in Central/Southern Hokkaido, 22 in Tokachi/Kushiro/Nemuro, 35 in Northern Hokkaido/Okhotsk), we found zero stations that officially state overnight parking is prohibited. (Michi no Eki Asahikawa does prohibit overnight rest in indoor facilities such as corridors and restrooms, but that wording does not specifically name the parking area.) At the same time, zero stations officially state that van-sleeping is welcome or permitted — the reality is that overnight parking-lot rules are simply not documented on most official sites (checked August 2026; the remaining 32 stations were not checked this time).

Legally, roadside stations are rest facilities, not accommodation. The common understanding is that brief rests are expected while multi-night stays, tents, and generators are not — but this is not a rule each station has individually stated; it follows from the legal position of roadside stations as facilities under road administrators.

In this article, each station’s listing notes what we could confirm on its official site (whether 24-hour toilets are mentioned, and the check date). “Not stated” doesn’t mean prohibited — it means the official site simply didn’t mention it. If you want a longer stay or need power, choose a paid site built for overnight stays rather than the roadside station itself. Among the 20 stations covered here, Michi no Eki Hana Road Eniwa has an on-site RV Park with sites set up for overnight stays rather than roadside-station parking (RV Park confirmed on the official site, 2026-09-02). The fee and power conditions could not be confirmed — the relevant page on the official site was unreachable as of 2026-09-02 — so contact the facility directly before booking. Michi no Eki Biei Shirogane Birke also has a paid campervan site (power, water, showers, laundry), though it’s only set up spring through autumn and pricing isn’t listed on the official site — contact them in advance.

① Roadside Stations Are “Rest Facilities”

Legally, roadside stations are rest facilities, not accommodation. Brief overnight rests are tolerated, but setting up tents, running generators, and multi-night stays are prohibited. Maintaining these courtesies protects van-sleeping culture for everyone.

Even in summer, Hokkaido nights are cold. You won’t need AC, leaving more sub-battery capacity, but a sleeping bag and blanket are essential.

Doo (Central) | Easy Access, Spectacular Scenery (6 Spots)

Central Hokkaido is close to New Chitose Airport and Sapporo — ideal as a departure/arrival base for a Hokkaido trip.

① Michi no Eki Niseko View Plaza (Abuta-gun Niseko-cho)

One of Hokkaido’s most photogenic spots, with Mount Yotei directly in front. The farm produce market is well stocked with fresh potatoes and corn. Large parking area accommodates big vehicles easily. In summer, visitors arrive from early morning — arriving by around 18:00 is recommended.

② Michi no Eki Space Apple Yoichi (Yoichi-gun Yoichi-cho)

Yoichi is famous for whisky and fruit. The station has a unique exhibit of NASA space development materials. About 30 minutes from Otaru and within an hour of Sapporo — excellent access.

③ Michi no Eki Akaigawa (Yoichi-gun Akaigawa-mura)

A roadside station in the same area as Yoichi. It was closed from April 1, 2026 due to the absence of a designated operator, but the main building provisionally reopened on August 8, 2026 at 8:30. Per the official notice, hours are 8:30-18:00 for the main building, 9:00-17:00 for the farm stand, and 11:00-15:30 for the restaurant (confirmed 2026-09-02). As this is a provisional reopening, operating details may still change, and night-time parking/toilet availability is not stated in the notice. If you are considering it as a van-sleeping base, call Akaigawa Village (0135-34-6699) before visiting. Also check whether the adjacent “Akaigawa Onsen” hot spring is currently operating.

④ Michi no Eki Toyako (Abuta-gun Toyako-cho)

Situated on the shores of Lake Toya, with sweeping views of the volcanic lake, Mt. Usu, and Showa-Shinzan. Gateway to Toyako Onsen with many bathing facilities nearby. Quiet at night for quality van-sleeping; the morning sun reflected on the lake surface is breathtaking.

⑤ Michi no Eki Hana Road Eniwa (Eniwa City)

Just 15 minutes from New Chitose Airport. Convenient as a base for the first or last day of a trip. Good supply of gardening products and local vegetables reflecting Eniwa’s “flower town” identity. Perfect for the night before an early-morning flight. The ostomate-accessible toilet is not available for 24-hour use (confirmed on the official site, 2026-09-02).

⑥ Michi no Eki Maoi no Oka Park (Naganuma-cho)

About 50km east of Sapporo, perched on a hill above a vast farming landscape — quintessentially Hokkaido. The nearby “Naganuma Onsen” is open for day visits, making pre-sleep bathing easy.

The other Biei roadside station, located in the town centre. Excellent for sightseeing with a restaurant and farm produce sales. Combine with Shirogane Birke to complete your Biei visit.

⑨ Michi no Eki Mochigome no Sato ☆ Nayoro (Nayoro City)

A roadside station near Japan’s northernmost city. The “Nayoro milk soft-serve” is famous — queues in summer. Surrounded by vast farmland — pure Hokkaido scenery. A best spot for stargazing at night.

⑩ Michi no Eki Wakkanai (Wakkanai City)

Base camp about 30km from Cape Soya, Japan’s northernmost point. Unique integrated complex with the train station, featuring accommodation, hot springs, and shopping. A must-visit as the landmark for reaching Japan’s northernmost point.

Gateway to Shiretoko, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. A summer gathering point for van-sleepers from across Japan, heading to Shiretoko Goko Lakes and Kamuiwakka Hot Spring Falls. The early-morning view of the Shiretoko mountain range and sea is breathtaking. In season, arriving after 19:00 may mean no parking space.

⑬ Michi no Eki Mashu Onsen (Kawakami-gun Teshikaga-cho)

Sightseeing base for the mystical Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo. Famous hot spring town with multiple bathing facilities nearby. Busy during the day. Neither 24-hour toilet availability nor parking/stay-duration rules are stated on the official site (confirmed 2026-09-02). The official site does list operating hours, parking capacity (66 standard / 9 large vehicles), a foot bath, and a dog run. If you’re planning a longer or overnight stay, check with on-site signage or the facility directly. If you want to catch the early-morning mist over Lake Mashu, staying the night before is worth considering.

⑭ Michi no Eki Lake Saroma (Tokoro-gun Saroma-cho)

The official site is unreachable as of 2026-09-02 due to an expired SSL certificate, and 24-hour toilet availability is unconfirmed in this article. Kiyosato’s roadside station overlooking Mt. Shari. Adjacent hot spring facility “Papas Land” enables bathing then van-sleeping right there. Popular as a pre- or post-Shiretoko base.

A roadside station exhibiting national treasure “Hollow Clay Figure” of Jomon culture. About 50 minutes by car from Hakodate city. Combine with nearby “Ofune Ruins” and “Kakunosawa Ruins” for a historical sightseeing base. Large parking area, and the official site states “toilets and parking are available 24 hours” (confirmed 2026-09-02). Quiet environment suited for van-sleeping.

⑱ Michi no Eki You-Yu-Mori (Kayabe-gun Mori-cho)
